AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 versus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

Post by Apoptosis »

On August 14th, AMD announced three new graphics cards based on the ‘Vega’ GPU architecture: Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition, Radeon RX Vega 64 with air cooling and the Radeon RX Vega 56. The Radeon RX Vega 56 came a little sooner than we expected and we frankly weren’t prepared for it when the card arrived. We've gone back and test it against the GeForce GTX 1070 to see how the new Radeon RX Vega 56 holds up!

I usually don't let them get to me, but yesterday was the 2-year anniversary of my moms death. Her ex-boyfriend came into town and collected on a personal loan he gave her that I needed to re-pay him for (large amount that I didn't know about) and then was telling me all about his new girlfriend. He had no clue what the day was, so it just irked me. My AC broke on my car on the way home and then when I get home I saw some folks really lit up the comment section with hate. I'm not down with that.

People can rip on the reviews, but they don't understand how much work really happens. The 16-hour work days lately...

Six feature articles in 7 days and all were big articles with 15,850 words written. Over 200 hours of testing/writing/images went into that content. That is doesn't count the news posts that I did that add up to another 1,300 words. I'm proud of pushing out 17,000+ words of unique content a week. Not many sites have 1 person capable of that. Yet people don't know that and they come and blast an article for not being on par with say another site. That person doesn't know what is going on though. They don't know some sites got it early. They also don't know that larger site gets the product before us, has staff that does the benchmarks and then likely gets some financial assistance. It's hard for an independent publisher to compete against that.

You have review sites that are owned by folks that work at companies (Scott still owns Tech Report and works at AMD) and then you got sites like PC Perspective that the owner has become an analyst yet still handles reviews. He's getting paid for his research and consulting (meaning he knows about products way before the normal review) and then gets to review products on his site. Not a bad thing to get more money, but that is tough when he's the one person handling selling research papers, charging for consulting, asking for review samples, selling ad banners, setting up podcast/interviews and so on. He certainly must have a tough time keeping the content from being influenced by everything. It seems at some point he'll need to hire someone to manage PC Per, so he can focus on the analyst side.

Being both an analyst and review site owner has some perks. Sometimes companies fly in a person from each site for a tech day or event. This is also similar to some of the famous YouTubers that get to fly in someone that is in front of the camera and then the camera operator. That might not sound like a big deal, but when Intel flew people in for an Optane Memory workship the policy was that every attendee gets a sample. So, select sites got two samples. This allowed multiple people to test the device and it also allowed them to do RAID articles on launch day. That is becoming more common, so it makes it harder for the written sites to survive and thrive. Many sites are walking a fine line right now.

Damn man, sorry the the truly awful day :(

It is getting harder and harder for anything online to survive without some sort of big backing dollars. I know how much money it takes just to keep a site operational!

I will take one for the team and take a paycut. It will bite into my Bugatti budget but that's the sort of guy I am
