I understand his point but don't share the philosophy behind. It shouldn't be advertised as a voice recorder. A weird SD card reader? presenter? laser pointer? That's fine, but no way as a voice recorder.
For the reviewer: I think it would have been a good idea to post a file recorded with this device, since I read this review before buying it and I am very disappointed (with both).

Well, this is a bit of old tech. Actually, the 'voice recorder' feature is not really that bad. I actually have a bunch of presenters and remote mice pointers and this is still my favorite. I find the recorder actually pretty good with tons of space to record long sessions. You can even send the output file to Dragon Naturally Speaking and get a very good transcript of your recording.
I've let a number of colleagues use this pointer and no one has complained, in fact there have been a couple of purchases from folks who have first borrowed it from me.
Like most things, your mileage may vary, but to me it sounds like you got a bad unit to be honest. Now if you are trying to record a U2 concert to sell a CD, it might not be the best thing in the world, of if you are really looking for high quality recordings, this might not be what you are looking for. But for dictation or to record (in mono) a lecture/presentation I would still recommend this device. I have a Sony ICD-SX750 that I use 2-3 times a week for CD quality recordings. It's very nifty, but costly. When I really care about getting the highest fidelity, I use the Sony. When I just want to capture a lecture (and I'm already using the pointer anyway) I give the Targus a go and haven't had any problems.
You say you got it for $20?? That actually seems like a very good deal and makes me give it an even higher recommendation.
