I7 920 folding
I7 920 folding
I just ordered one of these to get big points. The more I am looking at it, I think I would have been better off buying a tri-sli setup (I have the board) I would have gotten more points day in and day out that with the 920. If you think I am incorrect let me know...or make me an offer.

Re: I7 920 folding
The more I look at the F@H forums, people really like to fold with just the SMP Client. They say it is cheaper than to buy a bunch of graphic cards. I say it is up to you. Myself, I gave up on SMP Client because I don't know what VMware is and my temps are to high, and this is Jan.. I don't think I will try water cooling, but the corsair all in one is something I might think about. Maybe for my next build, whenever that might be. Good luck
Re: I7 920 folding
You could try toning down your overclock smp folding on an i7 stock is about 8k ppd folding a2 cores.
Re: I7 920 folding
use the VM with -bigadv !
If you see my points I get, I am using a core i7-920 overclocked to 4ghz - gets me well over 50,000 points about every 3 days, give or take a couple hours.
I fold at about 1% per 32-34 minutes if you want to figure it out better and I use smp -7 while still using my GTX260 in the same computer folding.
bigadv is the way to go as long as you run 24/7

There is a thread on here with all the info you need - VERY simple to do, I was amazed!

Re: I7 920 folding
More thinking....tri-sli setup will get more points and be cheaper, but will eat more power. 3 260-16s will easily get 16,000 - 20,000 PPD. So that would be 48,000 - 60,000 points per 3 days. But like I said....thats about 500 ish watts for the cards and about 160 ish watts for the 920. Yup...i'm confused
Re: I7 920 folding
I still think you are going nuts - if you run bigadv and run 1 260 card (like I do) - you will use less power for the same or more points.Wifuzzy wrote:More thinking....tri-sli setup will get more points and be cheaper, but will eat more power. 3 260-16s will easily get 16,000 - 20,000 PPD. Now if you want to run bigadv and run tri-sli - have a blast. I just dont see how the power usage of all those video cards will pay off - plus you have to think of how close those cards are in a case, for heat purposes.

Re: I7 920 folding
I guess my point is to get those kinds of points requires a pretty health overclock and those setups tend to have problems here and there. Even if it is stable it is bound to drop the odd unit...video cards if they do it you did not waste 1-2 days on it. I still think the video cards will get you more reliable points...if for no other reason than I have never had to reload an OS to get my video cards back up and running. But I could be wrong about the CPU folding and I admit it. Just my 2 cents worth.KnightRid wrote:I still think you are going nuts - if you run bigadv and run 1 260 card (like I do) - you will use less power for the same or more points.Wifuzzy wrote:More thinking....tri-sli setup will get more points and be cheaper, but will eat more power. 3 260-16s will easily get 16,000 - 20,000 PPD. Why not go with both? Fold -bigadv under VMware with your Core i7, then get some cheap GPUs. You don't have to buy like GTX260 or anything like that. Besides, every little bit helps.

Re: I7 920 folding
So I went back to stock speeds. Temps are now 60C. Thats with both graphic cards folding. I will try to fold with SMP as long as I can. Points are points.

You could also do bigadv, I think Dan's bigadv turnins are very close to stock speed.

Re: I7 920 folding
I would love to, why doesn't someone come over and set it up I only have one hard drive in this rig. Don't know what VMware 3.0 is. If I could I would run bigadv. Edit: Can I still run two GPU Clients with bigadv?
Re: I7 920 folding
Was thinking about that. If I spent $400ish on vid cards(2 open pci-e slots)..I would be in the 45,000 PPD range running regular units on my I7...If I did the bid adv thing I would be over 50,000 PPD. Anyone wanna float me a loangeokilla wrote:Why not go with both? Fold -bigadv under VMware with your Core i7, then get some cheap GPUs. You don't have to buy like GTX260 or anything like that. Re: I7 920 folding
why spend 400, just get a GTS 250 or two, you can get one around $120(though i grabbed mine at $109, its sold out)Wifuzzy wrote:If I spent $400ish on vid cards(2 open pci-e slots)..I would be in the 45,000 PPD range running regular units on my I7...If I did the bid adv thing I would be over 50,000 PPD. Re: I7 920 folding
Was just a number I picked out of the air. Would be prob more like $300 including tax...but right now $300 is the same as $400.....I don't have either to spend on folding
Re: I7 920 folding
Are you on win 64bit, and do you have a pass key?vbironchef wrote:I would love to, why doesn't someone come over and set it up I only have one hard drive in this rig. Don't know what VMware 3.0 is. If I could I would run bigadv. Edit: Can I still run two GPU Clients with bigadv?
I haven't noticed a problem with it and my single gpu, if it does you can try smp 7 and leave one core for the gpus.

Re: I7 920 folding
First I would like to thank you for your help spitter. Yes my OS is win 64. I seem to be on a SMP client that is 32 bit. I guess that is how it is. Yes, I do have a passkey. So far I have completed 4 SMP units. All have been version 1.74.
Re: I7 920 folding
Sigh...all my parts came in today for my new rig....EXCEPT the friggin ram. It's back ordered.

Re: I7 920 folding
which brand, kit and part number did you order?
Re: I7 920 folding
I'm at work and don't remember. I know it was a cheaper one ddr3 1600. Why...got a suggestion?

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit and SMP2 client runs fine. It says 32-bit edition or whatever, but in reality, it'll run fine.vbironchef wrote:First I would like to thank you for your help spitter. And sorry for being mean, but you should check out the guides that are here, as well as consider making your own thread. Reason being you don't get answers is cus you don't check out the guides and stuff...
50K PPD? Um it takes a couple days to finish those -bigadv.... But yea, as skier said, get a couple GTS250. Or just wait till GPU3 and see how OpenCL (OpenMM?) changes things for folding.Wifuzzy wrote:Was thinking about that.
