Widescreen (1440x900) and Windows 2K

Post by Skippman »

I recently overhauled my media server here at Casa De` Skip and I can't get Windows 2K to display my monitors native resolution of 1440x900. My laptop which is also connected to this monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 931bw) will display 1440x900 without problems through my Compaq KVM.

When I switch to my server which is using a SiS Mirage chip (Sis 662MX) it doesn't scale to the screen. Instead I can scroll around like the image is to big for the monitor and I'm looking through a picture frame. If I drop the resolution to a 4x3 like 1024x768 then everyhing is fine. The display driver gives me the option of 1440x900, but when it's selected I'm back to that "looking through a picture frame" effect.

Is it that 2K doesn't support widescreen resolutions at all? Or do I have something set wrong somewhere? :-k

I get that with my KVM sometimes too (same res etc). I'm running an Aten CS1782, and it usually happens after the computer wakes up out of standby/sleep. I can't remember if it is when the KVM focus is on a different machine or if it is just a random thing it does after awaking from sleep now and again.

'Rebooting' the KVM doesn't help, and the only way I've found to fix it is by restarting the computer.

Completely sucks :(

I only just got my KVM last week, and am going to RMA it (can't use the keyboard until windows has loaded, so getting into the BIOS/Operating system choice boot screens can't be used). And if it doesn't fix that then I'm sending it back for a refund as I'm not happy with it.

I don't think I've explained this very well.

The monitors native resolution is 1440x900. The computer is set to 1024x768. The screen "fits" perfectly and the monitor scales the image correctly. When I set the GPU to 1440x900 the computer still outputs a 1024x768 image and simply makes the desktop larger than the resolution can display, resulting in the "looking through a picture frame" effect of my desktop panning left to right, top to bottom.

Set the resolution to 1440x900, then restart the computer. I know what you mean by panning screen. You scroll around the screen like you would on a website with a large page.

When you set the res to 1440x900 your monitor remembers that the old res was 1024x768, then the computer displays the 1440x900, which is much larger. Resetting the computer should also reset the monitor so it displays correctly. If the monitor is an HDTV, there may be a setting that will refresh the display, that may help too.

Nope, didn't work. Still getting the panning, which like you describe, feels like I'm looking at a web page larger than the window itself. This is maddening as I don't have the same problem with my laptop. I set the laptop (which uses the same KVM and monitor) to 1440x900 and it works just fine. Set Win2K to it, and here we go with the pan and scan. I'm beginning to wonder if Win2K just flat out doesn't support widescreen resolutions at all.

Yeah, that's what it sounded like the first time (and what was happening to me too).

Try installing Ultramon, I wonder if that would help
