I've never tried Mandriva tho I do have a copy just sitting here waiting to be installed. Just been distracted with school... 8-[

I've also got a copy of OpenSUSE and Gentoo I plan on messing around with once I get a chance (this weekend I hope)...I'll let you know if they are exceedingly slow.

Thinking about Gentoo. Suse I could never get my wireless to work with. That's the big issues, I may be stuck with Ubuntu because of that.

Your better off with Debian or Ubuntu. Mint for me was slow. Its just rebadged Ubuntu, uses the same repositories

Mint is great for the linux noob because it already has all the proprietary stuff installed for you (like Flash and Java) and the package management is (argueably) a little simpler but as Matt said it's a bit slow and IMO the start bar is HORRIBLE! Other than that it's just the same as Ubuntu.

Basically, if a techie asks me about linux I tell them about Ubuntu; if a non-techie does, I recommended Mint.

personally I'd spend the extra 10 minutes and help them install flash, java and other codecs, as I rather give them a more robust OS link Ubuntu
