HELP! WinXP reload dilemma?

Post by camaroguy1998 »

A friend dropped his Dell Dimension E310 off today. Its infected with at least one virus/malware.
I discussed it with him and we agreed to just wipe it clean and reload XP since there wasnt anything of value to him on it.
I went through the install process but had a couple hiccups....
First it would not let me delete the partition the original load of XP was on. It said the files to do the installation had been copied to that partition so it could not be deleted! Sounded logical to me!?! I finished the install and before I could reboot and run updates a screen popped up which has a red and yellow flashing bar that says....
"Installing Applications"
Below that is a part of the window that says.....
"Do not touch any keys during this installation"
and it flashes back and forth from that to....
"Please wait as long as 30 mins for this installation to complete"

I have never seen this before but, I have never reloaded a dimension before either!
Is this normal or is this probably the virus reestablishing itself????

HELP!!!!!

UPDATE: Its been more than 30 mins. and its still flashing the same messages!
I'm starting to worry just a bit!

Well at 45-50mins. it brought up the login screen and seems to be fine!
I've setup and run an AV & spyware and it seems to be clean!

So far no problems! Let's hope it stays that way!

I used the Dell OS disc, which is XP with Media Center!
I thought about this this morning and figure it was the update for the MC feature!
It states on the disc "Update Rollup 2" included!

I've ran adaware, Spybot, AVG and loaded ZA and none of them have detected a thing!
I'm pretty confident its clean!

Thanx for the input, it's greatly appreciated!
