Ubuntu is far too heavy on resourses on it's own (using KDE or GNOME)

Install XUbuntu, this will use the XFce desktop. If this is still too slow to use, install the "LXDE" desktop

Code: Select all

 sudo aptitude install lxde
Use the 32 bit version too.

Not by default, you'll have to look into using something like "wine" to run windows programs.
It's always better to make a clean break though and try find an opensource alternative.

If you don't let go of M$ completely, you'll never be able to appreciate Linux.

winXP for the ones running 512 ram or more. win98se for the rest under 256 ram.

My grandpa has a gateway amd 512 ram like the intel one with XP. It is fast booting with AVG on startup.

Ubuntu or xUbuntu for the 256 ram ones will work and run openoffice.

Install a stripped down version of XP using nLite. Disable all services that are not needed, i.e. Themes, Messenger, etc...
