DELAYING desktop screen after login in Win7x64

Postby Kaos Kid » Wed Jan 24, 2018 1:22 pm

I know this sounds bass-ackwards, but I am trying to figure out how to delay login (after inputting password) for about 10-20 seconds. The reason being is that I have a script set up (with echo off) to run when my wife's user account (non-admin) logs on. If the PC has been idle for awhile after the welcome screen at the login screen when she logs in, the script loads without command box showing and all is well. The problem is she randomly restarts the computer for stupid things like an error screen on a youtube video--I've told her before to just restart her IE browser and go back to the vid she wants, but she is stubborn and instead restarts the whole computer. After splash screen, when it gets to login, she immediately puts in her password so when the desktop screen appears her account is still loading and it shows the blank command box (task eng) for a few seconds and being impatient she right away hits the red X, which stops the script from loading. It is imperative that the script runs EVERY time she logs in, whether from cold boot or restart, so I want to try to delay the desktop screen showing up after login for anywhere between 10-20 seconds after she puts in her password and logs in. Every topic I see when using my Google-Fu addresses people having trouble with login taking too long to load to desktop, just the opposite of what I need. Any suggestions?

Specs:
Dell Optiplex 755 USFF
C2D E8400 @ 3Ghz
3GB DDR2 RAM
Win7x64
2 User accounts--Mine (Administrator rights) and hers (user)
The script is an autoexec.bat that I learned how to create myself that is triggered at login with task scheduler.
I have come to the conclusion that "FaceBook" should be renamed "FacePalm"

Winpatrol - www.winpatrol.com - click downloads and scroll down to find the free version.

Seems there is no super simple way to do it. That second link with the batch file may be the answer as it seems it should run that before putting up the password box when logging in.

Another one to read - https://superuser.com/questions/590398/ ... -8-desktop

And one more - https://lifehacker.com/5645098/make-win ... you-log-in

Or you could just stop spying on your wife and I exchanging naked pictures  just kidding, we text.

I wonder if it just takes so long because of the older chip w/less cores, DDR2 Memory, and older 80GB SATAII Spindrive with the output recorded on to a logical drive in another partition on the same physical drive as the OS...I have the exact same script running on the Living Room PC, except for a few differences: PC is an AMD 785 based chipset with a PhenomII x 4 B55, DDR3 Memory so faster memory and 2 more cores. The O/S is on a Kingston 300SSD so it boots and loads faster, and the script is stored on a different physical drive with the task schedular triggering it from the OS and the output is stored in the same drive that the batch script is stored.

It could be. I know Microsoft started putting getting into Windows ahead of pre-loading items. I would think the hard drive might be the biggest slow down. try a small SSD if you have one lying around and see how it goes. Should be an easy clone the drive situation so should not take a lot of your time.

I hate...HATE...partitioning drives. I never understood this as it does not matter in Windows since you cant re-install the OS and keep all your programs anyway. You still have to reinstall everything. Only things that would still be safe are your files on a different partition (which should be getting backed up anyway), unless the drive fails of course since partitioning does nothing to help with a drive failure ;)

I made a drive on the 2nd partition because the program I was using was balking at writing the output to my own user account in the OS partition while she was logged in and I didn't want the output writing to/being stored in her user account. I may just pick up a cheap flash drive and plug into the back of the PC to record output to and see if that could help as well, then merge the 2nd partition back into the OS partition. That old drive probably goes even slower having to read from one partition to write onto the other over and over again, although I don't really see a problem with the performance once the script loads but who knows? Worth a shot. AFA upgrading her to an SSD, I don't have an extra one right now and she's been such a queen bee lately that I don't want to upgrade her just for spite. Her sister and mom are using a computer I set up for them and gave them as well, I used to do maintenance on it and keep it running fast for them but they turned ugly on me too so I haven't done any virus/malware scans or defragging on it for about two years, I see her sis griping about the slow computer on FB and have to just chuckle about it, serves them right and that's what happens when they step on their own d**ks lol
