Production of 16x DVD+RW burners may be delayed

This is not good news for everyone that wanted 16x DVD burners...

Volume production of 16x DVD+RW burners for Japanese optical drive manufacturers such as Pioneer and Sony and their Taiwanese competitors including BenQ, Lite-On IT and Accesstek may be behind schedule due to a tight supply of LDs (laser diodes)

Looks like Phillips will have theirs out soon though.:

Phillips has launched their 16X DVD writer today, making it the fastest DVD burner in the world. This new 16x burner only comes two months after we announced that they would be coming out very soon. A 16x speed DVD burner is capable of burning a complete DVD in less than six minutes.

The burner has two layers which means it can burn on data on both sides of DVD's providing 8.5Gb of space on a DVD. The new DVD burner will be first available to Dell, and then to consumers very shortly. You will find the new burner priced around $170 bucks US.

This doesn't help the companies either

A US CLASS action suit has started against Sony, Pioneer, Philips and the 3C DVD Patent Pool.
The suit alleges that these companies have violated the Sherman antitrust act.

It's alleged that these companies have engaged in a conspiracy to monopolise the DVD player markets.

The suit also alleges that the group as a whole has engaged in price fixing and market manipulation
