Formatting RAID 5?

Post by Sowser »

I have 6 1TB Western Digital Greens hooked up in a RAID 5 array to the six SATA inputs of an ASUS P6T Deluxe. After finally getting the MoBo to start-up using the SAS input as a SAT device for my SSD where I have Vista Ultimate 64 Bit I went into the drives section of computer managment in order to format the array. The array is formatting at the rate of about 1% an hour so at that rate won't be done until Tuesday. Is that normal?

Depending on the rate of your controller.... It might be. Remember, the array has to calculate parity for every block on the set. Once the array is formatted, you should no longer have this problem.

Yup, took me better part of a day to format 4x 640GB drives in my NAS.

Formatting a raid is painful to watch.

Just finished formatting my six 1TB disks, RAID 5 array last night around 9 PM. Now I've got over 5 trillion bytes to fill!

Daymn. Lets hope you never break that array and need to re-construct it!

Run any sort of speed tests on it yet?

What would you suggest? I have both the RAID5 array and a G.Skill Titan SSD.
