Raid0

Post by sbohdan »

I have two 500GB HD's from seagate:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (ST3500418AS),500 GB,16 MB Cache
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (ST3500320AS),500GB, 32MB Cache
their speed is slightly different but not much (the first is faster)

my question:
can I make a Raid0 setup, even though they aren't exactly the same models or should I just buy another one that is exactly the same model?

I highly advise not doing RAID 0... It's burnt me too many times in the past... 1 drive always fails on me and I lose data...

As for putting two different models in RAID 0.... even a worse idea. Buy two drives and make sure they have the same firmware version... You don't have to have the same firmware on both drives as I've run plenty of the same model drives with different firmware revisions together in NAS servers, but I wouldn't advise it if you have the time to get them all on the same firmware.

When a drive fails on a 1-2 year old NAS and you order in a new drive with a newer firmware revision I've never had any problems rebuilding the array onto that new drive.

thanks for the advice. I wouldn't have any important data on them except windows, aps and games that could be easily reinstalled in case of failure (I never had a HDD fail on me yet in 14 years :P ). so I guess I just get another ST3500418AS (it has BOTH read/write speed around 110MB/s and cost $50). what could I expect in means of speed if I have a RAID0 made of 2 of these?
