Problem with Matrix or Windows?

Post by mongoose »

In Windows XP SP3 Disk Management, my D drive shows as Online (with errors) and Healthy (at risk). It is now shows a dynamic disk, it was a basic disk. Two WD Caviar SE / SE16 250GB SATA disks in an Intel Matrix Storage RAID 1/RAID 0. The board is an Asus P5AD2 Deluxe, 925x chipset and Intel's 82801FR controller hub (ICH6R) and the Intel Application Accelerator RAID option ROM v4.5.0.6448. chkdsk found 0 bytes in bad sectors. I ran WD's disk diags, no errors. The computer works fine, I just happened to notice it.

From the event log: Event ID 51 "An error was detected on device \Device Harddisk2\D during a paging operation." and Event ID 11 "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\D."

Are there any utilities to check the Matrix Storage for errors? Could it be a Matrix driver problem or a Windows problem?

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Update to Intel's newer storage software Rapid Storage Technology. After the install open up the software and run the diagnostic. I would tend to trust their software's results over what Windows reports. But to be on the safe side you might want to back up anything important as an extra precaution.

File name: iata_enu.exe Version: 10.1.0.1008

This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Bummer.

EDIT: this oughta cover it, no?

Sounds like it should work, don't know why it didn't.

What software are you using to get your SMART status? Try running HWiNFO32 and see what it says.

Download the Portable ZIP if you don't want the program to install.

I used HDTune and WD's LifeGuard diags, they cant see RAID drives from the OS, most of the categories were blank, SMART, drive size etc.

HWiNFO32
drive model: Intel raid 0 volume
drive revision: 0.1.
device type: disk drive
drive capacity: 32,765 bytes

drive model: Intel raid 1 volume
drive revision: 0.1.
device type: disk drive
drive capacity:

the C drive is the raid 0 32GB system drive and the D drive is the 232GB raid 1 data drive.

Try AIDA64 then. It supports RAID arrays, but the caveat here is since it's a trial that some of the values will be covered up.

You can also try CrystalDiskInfo. Don't know if it works with RAID or not.

AIDA64 Extreme was Everest Ultimate, or something like that. I had run Everest already and I bought the full AIDA64 Extreme. There are no tests to run but it pumps out a truckload of stuff. Looks like everything is there.

"SMART information for RAID array member drives can be displayed for 3ware, Areca, HighPoint RocketRAID 26xx, and LSI MegaIDE RAID controllers. Other RAID controllers either do not have a driver that makes SMART readout possible, or they are not supported by AIDA64."

Contact AIDA64 through their support forums. They'll fix the problem for you, I had RAID issues with it on one of my computers and they fixed AIDA64 in a few days for me.

Just so we're on the same page here. The RAID array that has errors, supposedly, is on the Intel RAID controller correct?

Yes.

Hard Disk Sentinel cant see SMART data either.

Also, take a look at the interface type.

Sorry man I'm out of ideas how to check it out. But if one piece of software is reporting errors then it has its reasons. Just keep an eye on the drive(s) that are being reported as having issues.

Thats the thing, the software in question is Windows XP, it started the whole thing. Thats why I want another source to confirm or deny.

I believe that the Windows Update assessment tool does a disc check too. I might be wrong but it won't hurt to see what it says.

I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. The only mention of hard disks was "2.3GB free space available on C:" and how I needed at least 16GB of free space...

I could just convert it back to a basic disk. Then XP wouldnt see a problem. Miller time.
