Slow SSD

Post by sbohdan »

I have a OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD (3GB/s), that is way too slow in the little PC I put together for my son. I benched it with AS SSD in my main rig and it is pretty good there (270MB sequential read and 240MB write) but in my son's PC it only shows 160MB/80MB. IT is a SATA2 SSD, so the performance in my rig shows the max. it can do.
Here is the image of AS SSD. Hope to get this solved...
I tried all the SATA ports on the MOBO but it is the same.

Guessing - set at IDE rather than AHCI in bios?
Remember, I am opinionated and nothing I say or do reflects on anyone or anything else but me :finga:

That's another problem. I couldn't find any IDE/AHCI adjustment in the BIOS :(

There is no bus speed for my main rig - the specs are in my sig. My sons computer is:

C2D E8400 @ 4.2Ghz
DDR2 1066 2GB @ 467Mhz (934Mhz) 1:1
Gygabyte Gigabyte G31M - ES2L MOBO Bios: FH
OCZ vertex2 120GB SATA2
bus: 467Mhz (1868Mhz)
GTX 460 @ 800Mhz/1995Mhz
Main rig: NZXT Phantom modded case with Danger Den WC, Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite, Ryzen 5800X @ stock, 32GB Patriot Viper DDR4 3200Mhz 16-18-18-36-1T, AMD RX 5700XT + AlphaCool WC, ACER Nitro XV2 27", SP 1TB nvme PCiE GEN3, Samsung 2TB; Cooler Master MW Gold 650W, Win10 Pro 64

I don't think the Intel ICH7 chipset supports AHCI. Right now it looks to me like you are running IDE mode in the BIOS with generic Microsoft drivers.

What I would do is go under Integrated Peripherals on the main BIOS menu.

Once you are in that menu you need to go down to on-chip SATA Mode change it from AUTO to Enhanced. If I recall correctly Gigabyte really screwed up the terminology on that board and had the settings as Disabled, Auto, Combined, Enhanced, and Non-Combined. I think that forces it to SATA.

Whatever the setting make sure you install the Intel storage drivers and don't use the Microsoft ones that come in Windows. Once you get out of IDE mode and into SATA mode I think your performance will jump up.

Also here is a link to a much newer build of AS SSD! I think 1.7.4739.38088 is the latest build.

If you have to re-install windows you might want to use the OCZ Toolbox and run secure erase on the Vertex 2 SSD to get it running back to a FOB state before slapping on the OS again.

Thanks a lot Nate. Where do I get the Intel drivers? The Gigabyte site has no drivers for this MOBo, only audio, LAN and a chipset INF - that's all.
Also: How do I force the Intel drivers to be used instead of microsoft?

What OS? I'm assuming Windows 7 64-bit.

After looking into this more I still don't think your board supports AHCI due to the ICH7 chipset. It's not listed here - http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/i ... 012304.htm

Here is the Gigabyte download page for the latest chipset driver according to Gigabyte (9.1.2.1007) - http://www.gigabyte.com/products/produc ... id=3485#dl

I know there are newer chipset drivers out there, but you'd have to download some and see what works on that board.

Intel INF Chipset drivers 9.1.2.1008 - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... top-Boards

I don't think these will work (9.2.0.1025), but worth a shot - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... -Chipsets-

I'd just run the update utility and see what it says - http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu
