NVIDIA's New Tesselation Demo

NVIDIA has published two Direct3D 11 tech-demos for the GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470. Both demos (island and hair) are based on hardware tessellation, one the big feature of D3D11 / SM5 GPUs and have been shown during GTX 400 launch

You may have seen videos of these two demo's on the nvidia site previously as they were shown back in March when Fermi made its first appearance to show off it's own tessellation power. Well now anyone with a DirectX 11 capable graphics card can adjust hardware tessellation on-the-fly and see just how photo-realistic the new technology can make a game look when utilized. The Hair Tessellation Demo is less than 2MB, and the Island Demo is less than 17MB in size.


the Island demo comes with a roaming camera with a specified course it runs, and you can pause the camera at any time to adjust the tessellation LOD, but the demo still runs when the camera stops moving, so you can adjust the LOD on-the-fly and really see Tessellation at work!

I was surprised to see the screenshots using an ATI card, so I gave the hair demo a try and it worked very nicely. I thought Nvidia locked their demos to only allow Nvidia cards.

nope, its general hardware accelerated Tessellation, supersonic sled and design garage are geforce-only though(just tested supersonic and it pulls up a requirements list upon running it and says essentially "GTX 4xx cards only, now exiting.")

(and i'm personally glad its that way because i dont have the bankroll for a GF100 card )

nvidia pulled the files off their servers because evidently they were meant to be released(were in beta more or less), but they plan to re-release both demo's shortly, hopefully by computex
