Dedicated Physx Card Question

Post by Major_A »

After playing some Mafia II I decided to throw my old 8800 GTS 320MB card in my machine to run as a dedicated Physx card. For grins I ran GPU-Z to see what the clocks were set to and I noticed that the CUDA checkmark box was empty. I thought that the 8x00 series and newer cards all supported CUDA. At this point would I be better of putting the 8800 GTS in my HTPC and trying my luck with the 9400 GT that it has installed?

It is supported. Personally I would keep the 8800 GTS installed. A friend of mine has a 295 with a 8800 GTS for PhysX as well. Works just fine. Why the GPU-Z box is empty I'm not sure.

the secondary GPU can be physX ONLY, no other technology would be run off that GPU

could just be a bug with GPU-Z...

Did you try a couple different versions of GPU-Z just to see?

PhysX is shown as enabled on the 8800 GTS in the NVIDIA cPanel right?

physX will show up as checked, but nothing else should be checked on the GTS, your 260 should have CUDA OpenCL and Direct Compute and the 260 will also have physX checked because the tech is enabled, not necessarily on that card (like you can have a 5870 with physX checked)

I misinterpreted what I saw the other day. But why would it support Physx and not CUDA? Aren't they basically one in the same?

I wouldn't fret too much over this... all new NVIDIA drivers are coming soon... can you say release 260?

cool, though major i dont think the new driver will change your "problem" because both cards can't each handle all the tech, only one can do each thing (ie, they cant both do physX, they can't both work to display one screen, they can't both handle the same openCL/openGL/directX workload)

why do you even care about CUDA though? are you programming with it or something? only one or two programs use it exclusively the only mainstream app being badaboom and you have to use the primary graphics for that anyway (maybe folding, but cuda support is included in all forceware driver kits now, so if it can fold it's working anyway)

The 8800 GTS was thrown in there just for Physx acceleration, nothing else. The only program I have that uses CUDA is TMPEGEnc and my CPU is faster at applying the filters than when it does the work on my GTX 260.
