GTX 460 temps

Post by skier »

so i got myself a new GTX 460 from EVGA a little before christmas and finally put my old 460's Arctic freezer pro dual fan heatsink on it (below)

now these are my temps after running Furmark 1.8.2 with postFX and extremeburn at 1920x1080 for about 15minutes while i was putting my xmas tree away

is that (93c) reasonable? been a long time since i had my old 460, and 70% is the point where i start to actually hear the AC FreezerPro louder than the other fans

It's my understanding there's a software switch in the nVidia drivers that notices the FurMark executable. From there it locks the temp down to a certain temp/voltage. Try running a different 3D demo and seeing what the temps are. Realistically FurMark is more demanding than any game on the market so it's a pretty bad indication (IMHO) of temps.

Loop Unigine Heaven for the 2 or 3 runs with all the details turned up and see what's reported. Even a better indication would be a loop it at the resolution you play your games at and where the benchmark is still smooth. You aren't going to play Battlefield 3 if it looks like a slideshow. That make sense?

93C would be to much even with the stock cooling, not alone that cooler. Something is definitely wrong here furmark or not. Maybe the cooler is not installed correctly or you forgot to put some paste on the core

Take the cooler off and check everything again.

just finally ran metro 2033 for a bit to test temps, steady 51C with the settings cranked. didn't think furmark was that far off, still good to test stability tho!

Sounds more like the temps you'll actually see playing games.

i didnt notice this with my previous 460, but furmark 1.7.0 mode at 1920x1080 at 900/2050 is only running at a steady 55c, whereas 1.8.2 mode cranked at lower clocks was hitting north of 90C. must be a glitch in furmark, i remember my gtx 260 couldn't even RUN 1.8.2 mode
