GTX 580 SLI Issue

Post by DJ Tucker »

So I purchased a gainward gtx 580 phantom 3gb to sli with my msi gtx 580 twin frozr 2 3gb. however both cards work perfectly fine on their own even when they are both plugged in together with sli disabled. as soon as I enable sli both cards instantly code 43 and I have to uninstall the driver and reinstall again to get them to work again. I'm stuck in this endless loop. I really need help!

I am going to be of no help as everything i have seen points to MANY people having the same problem. I would remove and re-seat everything just to make sure a contact wasnt whacked but I have not found any real solution other than to keep reinstalling/rebooting.

You dont have either overclocked do you? You could try to underclock one or both to a massive degree just to see if maybe the one card is performing lower than the other and causing problems...??

surprisingly I found that after constant reinstalling that the issue must be a bios problem. after downloading the bios and flashing it I got it to work :)

the problem I have now is a can't overclock it well. I mean I can get 800mhz @ 1.037v but my msi gtx 580 can get 840mhz at the same voltage :( does anyone know if there is a newer bios than 70.10.17.00.01 for the gainward phantom 3gb?

ok, so I have the problem of the overclock sorted. however, I have another issue in that some games I play can't use more than 50% of my sli setup and nothing I try works? anyone else had this issue?

Poorly optimized games and/or your cpu could be a bottleneck.

I vote for the poorly optimized games as the i5 should do a decent job (I think Witcher 3 will change that though).

I have had local people ask me about this issue for about as long as SLI has been out and most of the time (as long as you have the newest drivers) it turns out to be one of the above. Look how long it took the computer world to grab on to 64-bit or even multi-cpu! It is sad how long change takes on the software side when hardware has been able to do the stuff for generations.

yeah I agree for it being poorly optimized. the games that use 50% of my gpu while in sli run slightly better on one gtx 580 as supposed to 2. the thing that confuses me is that the newest 3dmark benching tool only uses 50% on sli.

I honestly know nothing about 3dmark. My GTX660 still does good enough for me (until Witcher 3) and I never really had the money to do SLI. I would love to have a nive 980 card but too cold this winter for the money tree to produce much LOL

Have you thought about getting rid of SLI and going with just 1 higher end video card? I didnt know if you would sell your cards if it would make it feasible or not. Just a thought :)
