My New Video Card for My New Build Should Be....?

Howdy, all.

I need some suggestions for a video card for my new build. I have had good success with nVidia and would like to stay with them. Here are the stats:

I am a weekend warrior (well, shaman actually) gamer. I play WoW, EQII, and the occasional PC game like Roller Coaster Tycoon or Hello, Kit... um... other similar games. I also use my computer heavily for a blog I maintain and for word processing and photo editing.

At the current time, I have the following components for my new build

Motherboard: Intel D975XBX2
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P6400 Conroe 2.13 GHz 775
RAM: 2 GBs of Corsair DDR SDRAM 800 Dual Channel
OS: MS Vista Ultimate - 32 bit

I have been looking at one card that has piqued my interest, but it might be overkill: GeForce 8800GTS 320 MB GDDR3

DirectX 10 would be nice, but I don't think essential for my usage.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Good card that will last you for quite a while, if you have the money, go for it

My last 3 cards have been EVGA. Lifetime warranty and 90 day step up program to trade up. Current card was the result of a step up from 7950 GT KO 512mb to 8800 GTS 640mb and the cost was only $160.

I got the eVGA 8800 gts a few weeks ago and I like it alot. I had a eVGA 6800. I play BF2142 on highest settings and I get per Fraps a minimum of 56+fps at all times playing. In my Full Armor I can not heard it over the two 120mm fans with the case. You should have two spare power connectors for it..as my PSU is SLi compliant I had them. I also had plenty of space on my ASUS A8N preminum too. I have to get power connector leads (extension) so I can dress out the power cable..which I don't like the way they are now and are not out of the way of the air flow like I like it. I say go for it if you have the ~$300US for it.

WOW will look alot better and you can use the dual output to drive a LCD/CRT and a large screen 50" for photo slide shows or powerpoints which I do.

I highly reccomend the 8800GTS 320MB...I got the extreme XXX version from XFX because I plan to OC it farther in the future but even at stock setting, this card more than made the soft blow to my wallet well worth it.
Also, unless I've REALLY overlooked something (I don't think I have), the 320MB edition only needs one 6pin power connector...

Currently this looks like the best card for the money and if you're willing to spend it, you'll be glad you did.

All the GTS cards only use one PCI-E power connector (I have the 640mb version) the GTX requires two.

The GTS320 would be a good buy as long as you don't have to give blood and sell the dog to get it

It may be overkill for the moment but in a year you'll be glad you did methinks

hey! i'm glad that everyone is pointing you in a higher-end direction BUT you might want to check this midrange card (retails at ~$100) and LR just did a review on it.

eVGA GeForce 7600 GS 512MB Video Card

can't really hurt to read a review right? hahaha but the 8800 GTS you were looking at really is a sweet card, too - if you want to fork over the $$ for it

Thanks to everyone for chiming in on this. I am not too concerned about the extra dollars for the 8800, but just wondering what people in general thought.

It looks like a monster, but should do well. Hopefully a price reduction in the very near future.

You do not play very demanding games ,so i would go 7900 way. And when many dx10 games are out(1 year?) buy yourself dx10 card.

Exactly, I play WoW on a 7300GT and with every setting at max I sit at 45-60 FPS (your eyes can only se about 20-25 FPS anyways)

Yeah, Those games arent very graphics intense. the only thing I would worry about is the photo editing, but even then an 8800 is overkill. you could always just add more ram for the photo editing.

You could get away with a 7600 as long as you dont need dx10.

if u were to get a 320 8800 why wouldnt you just get te 640 for 80-100 bucks more.

I'd say unless you are looking to directx10 games, just go for a 7600GT, or a 7900gs. both are great for the games you listed. By the sounds of it the power of an 8800GTS would be wasted on those games.

However in a year or so you most likely will be regretting the 7600GT or 7900GS. it all depends on how much you are willing to spend. 7 series will be great for another year, or two years at the most, but the 8800GTS will be good for say 4 years or more.
