Dell

Customize to your delight. I love my 1520. Just put a 9300 in it, I have 160GB (or SSD depending) and a 8400GS, the 8600GT is a capable gaming card. I'm not sure what they have in them now

If you want a better then look at the XPS line.

Might check out some ODMs like Clevo and Compal. They're only available through resellers usually but when you know which chassis the laptop is based on it's a lot easier to find a great deal. Also if you find a notebook you really like most resellers will tell you the ODM if you ask nicely :)

Couple resources/sites with good prices:

You can always get a Gateway P-6860 FX. It was on sell at Best Buy for 1089 but its back up to 1349. I heard its very easy to upgrade the CPU. I just picked up a 6831 for 900 on ebay.
