Quakecon 2005 "Build your own notebook"
It was a 760 and I'm very excited about putting it to good useApoptosis wrote:mongol05 -
Welcome to the forums and congratulations on winning the processor. Did you get the 760 or 770??
I found all the following prices via Froogle and shopping.legitreviews.com
Processor - Free
ASUS Z71V Chassis - $724 - Axcent Micro
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive - $90 - ABS Computer Technologies
2 x 256mb Kingston SO-DIMM's - KVR533D2S4/256 - $76- MWave
Since you got a free CPU you would need the above parts $890 and then a hard drive ($115ish). Hopefully you have a Windows XP cd sitting around to use. Total cost would be just over one grand which is a steal.
Add in a good hard drive and you will have a sweet system! If you have an idea what sized monitor you'd want in a smaller notebook let me know and I will think about other good notebooks that would have ATI or nVidia graphics.
I was thinking of a 12 inch widescreen, something similar to that small laptop on stage that the someone said looked like a sony laptop. I want it to be light and small enough that I can carry it to class without it being cumbersome.

ASUS Z33A
• Intel® Pentium® M Processor 730-765, 1.6GHz-2.10GHz , 400/533 FSB, 2MB L2 Cache
• Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition
• 12.1" TFT LCD
• DDR II 400MHz DRAM support
• Hard drive supporting 40/60/80GB
• Combo/DVD-ROM/DVD-Dual
• Mobile Intel® 915GM Express Chipset
• 3 x USB 2.0, 1 x IEEE 1394, card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO)
• 3.3lbs (with 3-cell battery pack)
Something like that is ~$810 shipped. Note you lose the PCI-Express graphics, but gain in weight and size (only 3.3lbs)
Linky
If only it was cheaper than the Z71V, I would go for this probably. It's a shame that the retailer you link for it had it out of stock.Apoptosis wrote:mongol05 wrote:I was thinking of a 12 inch widescreen, something similar to that small laptop on stage that the someone said looked like a sony laptop. Also, where'd you get the price for the internal wireless card?
Based on input from the Quakecon event and this forum, I took the plunge and ordered the parts for my first laptop build. Everything came in yesterday. I ended up with:
ASUS Z71V
Pentium M 760
2 x 512 DDR2
60GB 7200 RPM
Intel Pro A/B/G Wireless
ASUS 24X CD-R 24X CD-RW 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-ROM
Everything went together easily and I couldn't be happier. Not a single hitch with hardware or XP installation.
Thanks for all the help...
