No Internet access Windows 7

Post by wescot »

Can ping router and 4.2.2.2 OK. Have reset winsock via [netsh winsock reset catalog] and [netsh int ip reset reset.log]. Have un-installed IE & re-installed. Firefox can not access Internet either. Have set up new user. Firewall is off. No proxy.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Uninstalling & reinstalling did not change the situation.

BTW, I can not ping www.google.com but I can ping 4.2.2.2.

Thanks.

Other systems on the LAN are accessing the WAN OK, so I believe DNS servers are correct. Do you have a recommended method to check DNS servers?

Thanks.

Easiest thing to do is to check the DNS settings against a known working computer on the LAN. The assigned DNS servers can be seen in the 'status' window of the network connection adaptor.

(On network connections, right click the adaptor, status, details, and DNS will be in the list)

The 3 DNS servers show up as on other stations on the LAN.
Thanks.

Can you ping [66.102.9.99]?

Do the different workstations all show the same config when you run ipconfig /all in a cmd window (run > cmd)?

Is this machine set up with any VPN connections that are active?

Well 66.102.9.99 is the IP address for google. :-/

Which screams to me DNS issues, but as it's the same as other PCs and they're working fine I'm a little puzzled.

Can you try adding another DNS server to the machine: 208.67.222.222 (It's one of the open DNS servers)

(On network connections, right click the adaptor, status, properties, TCP/IP v4, properties, advanced, DNS tab, and add the DNS there, for now click the green arrows at the side of the DNS entry to move it up to the top)

Added the 208.67.222.222 as the only DNS, rebooted, still can't ping www.google.com.
Thanks.

Presume you've already tried windows built in "diagnose and repair" feature on the right click menu of the network adaptor?

Yes, I've tried the diagnostic. "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"
Thanks.

Sorry mate, I'm out of ideas.

It's connected fine, but not resolving hostnames. I don't know of anything besides the DNS (which we've ruled out!) when this is the issue.

Dan
I'll disable the onboard NIC & put in a PCI NIC card to see if there's any change.
Thanks.

FYI, the same scenario goes when a PCI NIC is used, so the problem(s) is/are not NIC related.
Thanks.
