Any ATI Radeon HD 5000 Video Card Owners With Grey Screens?

Post by Apoptosis »

I've heard a ton of buzz about grey screens and system hangs with the new ATI Radeon HD 5000 cards, but personally I've tested every single one of the ATI cards and after thousands of hours of use I have never personally seen a grey screen. I know many of our readers have Radeon 5000 series cards, so I am curious if any of you have seen it.

No issues on the 5870 except maybe once when the PC went to sleep, i couldn't get the display back. On the 5970, no issues.

Hi. First post here. I bought a XFX 5870 and have been impressed with it's performance but unfortunately, every once in awhile, my screen will become corrupted and I'll have to reboot the system. The odd thing is that I don't seem to have this issue when playing games or running videos. Only seems to happen when I'm web browsing and the card is at idle. I haven't seen this "grey screen" problem and I thought it was just a glitch that I'd be able to sort out sooner or later but I found this post that indicates it's a problem that seems to affect a unknown percentage of cards in several different ways:

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ATI-Ra ... ,9529.html
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ATI-Gr ... ,9549.html

I tried the 10.1 hotfix that was released a couple days ago but I can't see any improvement.

I got a hold of XFX support and here's what they replied with: "What kind of graphical corruption are you seeing? The hotfix is for random full screen lock ups with lines down the screen, not corruption."

My Response: "So far, the graphic corruption doesn`t seem to be happening in any games. It only seems to happen when I`m web browsing. As far as what it looks like, I`m not sure how to describe it but it looks similar to the 4th image in the link below. Although similar, the reason listed on the site is heat related which I don`t think is the cause with mine. As I said, running games is no problem."

The XFX tech then asked me to download the AMD GPU Clock Tool from
techPowerUp! and set the 2D clocks to 300/900. See if this resolves the issue. This utility only affects the clocks on the card until you restart so it is good to test with without making any permanent changes. :

I have this utility installed now but I'm at a loss to figure out how to adjust the 2D clocks. As you can see, it's listed in options in the link below but I can't figure out how to access it.

I tried a search for some kind of help guide but no luck. Anybody here that can help me with this utility? Thanks!

5750 here and a friend has a pair of 5770's neither of which have had any issues.

In my opinion the number of grey screen issues is widely over reported. It was something for those who were holding out for fermi to trumpet to help reassure themselves they had made the right decision. Its a real problem yes, but 75% of the posts I've seen about it are by those who don't even own a 5000 series card. Then there's a handful of 5000 owners who say they have had no issues, and maybe %1-2 who actually own a troubled card.
