Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
So every time I update my graphics drivers it goes 60 or higher frames to 40-55 frames.
why is it doing that and is it normal?
Im still using the drives that were on the CD

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Sounds like the more mature drivers are actually taking advantage of what the card can do. Usually drivers that come on the disc are already old when you open the box. Have you considered taking screenshots of the two side by side and having a look?
Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Well i would but it will only happen if I move. Its very jittery. but with the normal drivers it doesnt lag at all when moving. it moves up and down from 40 to 50 to 60 and so on.

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Have you fully uninstalled the old drivers & rebooted before installing the new ones?
Also, try uninstall; reboot then run "driver cleaner" to make sure they're fully removed.

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Do me a favor. Download FRAPS and setup a benchmark (see attachment). From there post the results here with the good and bad driver.

Well it would still be the same FPS until I move. I just installed the new driver. Its smooth when moving with the old driver and jittery with the new. and the same FPS with both standing still. The frames also change really fast so its kinda hard to take a snap. =/

Would that REEEALLY help? =/

It would be more helpful for us and you if you provide us with more detail of your system. Please fill these in:
- Processor/CPU? [example intel core 2 duo e5500]
- Motherboard model & make? [Gigabyte 990FX-UD3]
- Amount of RAM, number of sticks [2 x 2GB DDR2]
- Video card. You've already given us this
-Power supply brand & model [Antec True Power 550W]
- what version drivers have been used/tried [12.1, 12.2, etc]
What game are you trying to run that's stuttering?
What is the graphics setting set to?
What resolutiom are to running the game at? 1680x1050? 1920x1080? 1280x1024?

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
That's why I showed you the example. FRAPS is set to record your framerates over 3 minutes, in my example. Meaning start the game, hit the button assigned (F12, example), then start playing the game. Do that for both sets of drivers. Then show the log file to us (Min/Avg/Max FPS) for both drivers. This isn't about posting a picture it's about seeing what your framerates are doing with the different drivers.peronmls wrote:Well it would still be the same FPS until I move. *EDIT*
I just ran a 180 second benchmark and this is the information I got from FRAPS.
1. Frames: 8582
Time (ms): 180000
Min: 9
Max: 417
Avg: 47.678
2.Frames: 8582
Time (ms): 180000
Min: 9
Max: 417
Avg: 47.678
3. I was able to create a graph over the course of the 180 seconds.

RAM: 16GB 4 X 4
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5500
PSU: Logisys (500-550w?)

Graphics Setting: To the highest I can go without dropping a frame less than 60. No MSAA (games play smooth everywhere I go/move.

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Play that game like you would normally.
Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Should I turn "Vertial Sync" off for this? and how do I start the benchmarkMajor_A wrote:Play that game like you would normally.
Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
You can turn off V-Sync. See my first screenshot. The program tells you what button to press to start the benchmark. It also tells you where to find the results (you'll need Excel to open them up). If you don't have MS Office grab OpenOffice to open the results. Use my screenshot of FRAPS to help you get started.

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
They are all out of align besides FPS. I cant tell what number go in what column. Can I upload the benchmark files? used openoffice. I also noticed that my frames didnt go below 80 and it was still jittery.
Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Did you run this with both drivers? You can try to upload the results I don't know if the forum will take them. Alternatively you can upload them to Mediafire and post that link.

Here are all the files with both old and new drivers used.

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Did you start the game in the same spot and run around doing generally the same things with both runs? There are some changes in FRAPS. But there isn't anything in either that would indicate and issue. Looking back at your hardware to give more suggestions you have a serious hardware error. You say you have an Intel CoreDuo with an AMD motherboard. Download HWiNFO32 and post up a screenshot of the summary page.
Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Yes I did do it in the same spot and ran around in the same path. and no i don't have an Intel Processor I never said that. I have a AMD Athlon II X2. and a intel processor with AMD MoBo... is that even possible?
Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
You're right, that was someone else who suggested you post your specs, my bad.
Things to try:
Update your chipset drivers:
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/12-1_vista_ ... -64_sb.exe
Make sure your RAM is running at the correct speeds. Per HWiNFO32's screenshot you have it overclocked. If you are indeed running it at 667MHz then make sure the timings are at 9-9-9-24 instead of the 7-7-7-20 it's showing.
Completely uninstall your old video card drivers with Driver Sweeper, reboot after the sweep, then install the latest drivers.
Driver Sweeper: http://phyxion.net/Driver-Sweeper/Driver-Sweeper/
Latest Beta GPU Drivers: http://194.71.11.69/pub/games/PC/guru3d ... com%5D.exe
I see you have your CPU overclocked (240x15?). Try putting your CPU back to stock speed and see what happens. I know with AMD if you start to mess with the FSB and don't tweak the other options accordingly then things can get wonky.

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
Ok well I can tell you its not the overclocking and I never overclocked my RAM. I just recently flipped the OC switch (literally) thats on my MoBo and now im guessing it OC everything including the RAM. but i will turn it off any.
Are you sure I should use BETA drivers? wont it have bugs in it? Also should new video drivers give you better fps?

Re: Radeon HD 5500 low frames after driver update
New drivers address bugs more than help with FPS. I've seen driver improvements where they claim FPS gains but I doubt it's anything you'd notice while playing the game.
