Triple-Channel Memory Coming With Intel X58 Express Chipsets

Post by Apoptosis »

Well it seems the cat is out of the bag now that Computex is coming up, but triple-channel memory is coming!

Image
MSI also includes six memory slots because the CPU has triple channel DDR3, and exclusively DDR3, so you’ll have to buy at least three DIMMs to make the most of the new upper-tier Intel platform.
Pretty crazy stuff huh? So, I guess memory companies will start to bundle three modules in some high end kits now... Soon gamers will be running 6GB or 12GB of memory! (2GB per module per 3 or 6 slots).

This shows Nehalem is coming, retail boards slowing showing up :)

Triple sounds odd, but I guess we're getting used to it

I bet those memory module builders are simultaneously exited and terrified by trichannel.
You're looking at increased sales but also, a nasty RMA problem; people buy trichannel kits and as always, there will be faulty modules... Now, instead of 2 stick going back to RMA you now are getting 3 sticks...

Or all six modules LOL dont know yet but I think that MB and or chipset is made to run 6 modules for the full performance.
However, memory has not been the bottle neck from what I have seen so new CPU's will most likely be needed for the true performance of the chipset to be fully utilized. But it will be interesting to see the test results from the MB or platform.

Tri-chanel on these boards/CPU's is really going to kick some serious butt, it's going to end up killing me having to pay for all new components again though...........

I would agree with you it sucks buying all new hardware, but lets see how it performs before we do anything.
With Current CPU's I dont see any gain.

YES, the nehalem will support single, dual, and triple (or 3) channel memory. It would be interesting to see how well this will perform (3 channel I mean, we all know that the cpu is performing excellent).

so if you got 3Gb(3 X 1GB) would you be able to use all 3GB in a 32 bit OS?

Hi everybody
Greetings from newcomer.
I am just about to upgrade my pc to i7 working on Asus P6T with intel x58 that supports triple channel. I found that triple channel memory kits are pretty rare on the market, but of course there is a lot of dual channel kits. Will they work in a triple channel mode? I mean I can buy two dual channel kits and use just three chips from them, will they work in triple channel mode?

Cheers
Dominik

If they are two of the same kits, then yeah, using just 3 of the 4 modules will work.
