Cost of RAM

Post by smack323 »

in september i bought a 4GB kit for $56. I wanted to up my system to 8GB because i have started to run VM's on my computer. I went back to the egg and see the same kit I purchased is now $100. Is it typical for RAM to jump around in price so much?

It's kind of crazy. I wanted to upgrade my 2 gig HTPC but not at 80 bucks. I did see a kit for $64 dollars the other day but that only last a couple days.

DDR2 production is going down, while DDR3 is being ramped up. Supply and demand ;)

yeah, it was painful paying $80 for 1GB DDR1 ram when i build my first rig(when DDR2 was~$80 for a 4GB kit because it was new, but standardizing)

I bought 12 gigs of 800ddr2 back in May/June for a total of $92. If I were to buy those same 3 4gig kits today, the price is $90 each, you missed the ddr2 glut this year, maybe there will be one next year.

Yah, like WAY UP!
I have 8 gigs of Corsair DDR2 800 purchased between 8 months and a year ago.
Got them on NewEgg with two purchases with rebates for 20 bucks a piece ($40 total).
The same 4 gig ram set at NewEgg right now is 89.99 ($180 for 8 gigs).
Huge price increase.
Guess I will be keeping this system for a long time.
ga-z77-dh3 (great & cheap O/C'er from Gigabyte)
i2600k/16 gigs Kingson 1600 (OC'ed to 4.5Ghz)
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 + (lapped, smok'in deal, 38C idle, 65C loaded)
MSI GTX 660ti Power Edition
Antec 900 case (quiet)

Best you can do is try it out, might work just fine.

well the patriot kit is now down to $87 w/ free shipping. still I cant pull the trigger on it. I might just have to sit with 4GB until a new build.

DDR2 and DDR3 seem to have exactly the same pricing at DDR3's lower speeds, you can get a DDR3 800 1066 or 1333 kit (2x2) for about the price of DDR2 800 2x2
