Is there REALLY a performance difference between the two? More than 1-2%?
I can get 16gb of DDR3 1600 for $100, while 8th of DDR3 1866 would cost $85. It doesn't seem worth the extra cost.

Depends on your platform...
Did you read the review we posted up today? Shows a 1600MHz versus 1866MHz kit on Sandybridge.

Wow, talk about coincidental timing! Thanks!
Looks like a 1-3% improvement between DDR3 1600 vs DDR3 1866. I'll be using an eVGA Z68 mobo w/ an i5 2500k. I think I'd rather have 16GB of RAM than 8GB that's 1-3% faster.

Re: DDR3 1600 Vs DDR3 1866
With Ivy Bridge I'm getting plenty of throughput with my 8 Gigs of 1600 HyperX (almost 22 GB/s), but the latency is high (50 ns), (benchmarking with MaxxMEM). What I gather from all the reviews of faster memory is that the higher speeds don't so much give you faster throughput, but they give lower latency (sometimes down to around 30 ns), while throughput may hit 26 GB/s. I don't know from experience, but I assume if your latency drops 40%, you're going to feel the difference in system responsiveness. Anyway, I plan on testing this myself sooner or later, and I'd love to hear from anyone who's been there already, to see if they felt it was worth it.

If you're using a APU platform it's worth spending more for 1866 but otherwise it's just wastage
