Old Player, new movies..
i have a Samsung BD-P1000, i just updated to the newest firmware, and it plays a BluRay i just purchased(Resevoir Dogs) but not a BluRay from Netflix(Death Race) i was wondering if the newest titles are using different codecs, or if the disc is simply unplayable(the disc doesn't appear to have any scratches at all, but won't load is why i'm confused)

Re: Old Player, new movies..
I know for a fact Death Race uses BluRay Java 2.0 as I own it. This problem first came to light when 3:10 to Yumah first came out. People with older players were complaining they couldn't play it due to the Java content and unfortunatly there's no work around. One of the major reasons I waited for my Oppo BluRay player (which I love!)
Unfortunatly your player doesn't support that:

Re: Old Player, new movies..
so how do i know which movies are supported? is there a date?
also, why can any CD player play any CD, any DVD player play any DVD, but not all BluRay players can play all blurays, stupidest thing i've ever heard of

Re: Old Player, new movies..
Call it the march of technology. And you're wrong, not every DVD player can play every DVD nor can every CD player play every CD.
There's several diffrent formats to CD other than Redbook audio (the most common) including mixed mode (Audio CD's w/ extra content) and Super Audio CD (SACD) that might not play properlly in your players.
DVD is the same way. If you tried to play a PAL DVD in your NTSC DVD player it more than likely wouldn't work due to the diffrences in encoding, cadence, and resolution. If you have a player like the ones Oppo makes this wouldn't be an issue for you as they're region free and have the hardware to decode both PAL and NTSC video.
As for your BluRay questions it's pretty simple really. BluRay wasn't a finalized standard until very recently. The "Grace Profile" of BluRay 1.0 was originally intended to be a "proof of concept" profile. But as the format wars heated up many manufacturers rushed to market with thier 1st gen BluRay players. Now that BluRay is a more finalized standard many 1st gen players lack the hardware nessicary to support the Profile 1.1 and 2.0 discs. Look on the back of the disc's case and it should tell you want Profile the disc is mastered in. If it's anything other than Profile 1.0 you won't be able to play it I'm afraid. Since pretty much all newer titles (meaning recently in theaters, not recently released) are using BluRay Profile 2.0 you might want to consider getting a new player such as a PS3 or an Oppo (when it's released).

Re: Old Player, new movies..
Awesome! Let me know how the build comes! I've not been on Steam much lately due to workload here at the office.
Re: Old Player, new movies..
i could only afford one set of speakers tho so i'll still have one 10" speaker box empty, and the two 12's will still be old as well
