what gauge is recommended? This is for use in my home theater?

What system do you have? Do you have a high end amp and speakers? Are you a self proclaimed audiophile? Just to play it safe either way I'd say 12-14 gauge. Be sure to check out Monoprice for prices.

12GA would be fine for most applications. If you're going to use it in-wall, be sure it's certified for that use.

I always get the cheapest spool of 50ft I can find, usually 12G, doesn't make much difference, it's all about the build of the speaker and receiver

I have a Sony STRDG820 7.1 Audio Video Receiver and Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System - I would consider it a mid range set up- by no means would I say I am a audiophile - If it sounds decent I am happy with it. I was able to find 200ft of 16 gauge monster cable on ebay for about $40. I know I could have gotten an off brand for about $15 but for some reason I decided to go with the monster. I hope the 16 works well enough.
