my motherboard will run my 8600gt but, under specs it says its ran at x8 not 16. How bad is this hindering my performance?
Is there any way I can make it run slightly faster. I overclock the video card. But, the way I'm understanding it. My card is only as fast as it communicates with my motherboard. Is that x8 really worth just getting another motherboard. I'm a noob I guess. I know what I thought was a lot but, the more I learn the more I realize I don't know as much as I thought.
Please get back to me I'm curious

Run CPUzand post this tab for us.
You can see here that my board is running at the full 16x PCIe standard. I would have thought that yours would too (unless it is a board like the ASRock Dual VSTA)

that is the mobo. I know I was retarded for getting a cheap motherboard when I got everything else good.
I'll have the screen up tomorrow for you but, read the specs on the motherboard it clearly states
Expansion Slots
PCI Express x16 1 x PCI Express x16 slot (runs in x8 mode)
PCI Express x1 1
PCI Slots 2
thank you for your prompt reply I'd do the cpu-z but, I'm not at my house at this time.
Do you think the x8 could slow it down or do you think a 8600gt would be fine under a x8

Re: pci express x16 vs x8 help
Don't worry about the screenshot, I checked up on a review and it is as you said, it runs at 8x speed.
This will impact your games performance, but it won't render it unplayable. On the review I read, they did a 7800GTX on your mobo and a regular mobo (with PCIe x16) and the performance loss was around 10-20% for using the 8x only. But these were on games with hundreds of FPS to start with, so you should still be ok to play most games at good levels of quality (as the 8600 is slightly more powerful than the 7800GTX IIRC)
