740G chipset

Post by Merlin »

How does the 740G compare to the 690G and the 780G?

From what I understand the 780 chip set is king of the hill right now.

I know the 780G is the newest release along with the 740G and I know the 740G is one step down from the 780G sharing the SB700 but not the same Northbridge. I think its the 690Gs northbridge with the 780Gs Southbridge. I was mostly wondering if anyone knew any particulars about it.

Well I have this chipset running now on my new Micro ATX setup ( see sig) I love it so far but I have to add that the whole system is a big upgrade from what I had so it would have to be DOA for me not to love it. I will , not that this thread generated any interest at all, let you guys know when I try to OC the Black edition CPU that is running on it. I know that I saw some voltage control on the Gigabyte MOBO BIOS but I have not played with it yet.

That would be nice to post before and after comparisons. :)

Usually you would host the image on an image hosting site like ImageShack.

  1. go here http://imageshack.us/
  2. click "browse" and find the image
  3. click "host it!"
  4. copy from the box next to "Hotlink for forums (1)"
  5. paste it into the forums
*you can also get rid of or modify the URL tag but leave the IMG tag and everything inside it

I couldn't offer any advice so didn't reply earlier, but I read the thread :P

I'd like to see those benchies.

I would like to learn how to do it like you guys do in a review so it looks nice and neat. Really all I could do right now is run the benchies and write down the rnumbers then type them in a post. I did get a low end after market cooler " Cooler Master Vortex 752" which it looks like it is about the largest I can run in a micro ATX case like this one so heat my stop my overclock attempts before the chipset maxes out.

The best way to learn is by doing. :P

Just read through a few motherboard reviews here on LR and note the common things they have (and what topics they include, eg. layout, bios, benchmarks, overclocking etc).

Take pictures of the board (and the box it comes in if you want) and if there is something you think is interesting, make a note of it and tell us. You can choose to add pics of the area/item you are talking about if its not clear enough in the main pics of the board, or just want to break the text up a bit more. If installing it, tell us how you got on with the installation, i.e. was it quick and easy, or was there something fiddly that took ages to get right.

For benchmark results, done properly, you should repeat the benchmark at least 3 times and use the average for the results published. On a more 'amateur' scale a once through with benchmarks is fine. If you are comparing the results to another board then you can drop the results into excel and use the chart wizard to make pretty graphs of your data.

After each benchmark result posted, make a little comment about what the performance was like, but don't go into too much detail as you should leave that for the conclusion.

Once you've covered the bulk of the review, wrap it up and summarise what all the results have shown, comment on what you think about the board, and if you would recommend it or not at the end.

Hope this gives you an idea of what to do :P

It does thank you. I will work on it and see if I can come up with a novice review of this board.

Strange....I was trying to install and run AMD overdrive and after installing it I tried to run it and I got an error message " ovedrive does not detect a 7 series chipset on this computer". Everest tells me that the north bridge is a 690G pared with a SB700. I knew this before but I did not know the 740G chipset designation mean this is a hybrid board....not the 780G and not the 690G but in the middle. I got this board mainly because I was not going to use the integrated graphic of the 780G which seemed to be its main strong point as far as the north bridge was conscerned and I need to stay under a price limit so I cut some on all the main components ( about 30 off of each ). Time will tell as I test it more but it may be that I made an error picking this over the 780

Well now Core temp is wrong and Speed Fan cannot find a recognized chipset to communicate with and MBM5 reports nothing at all. I think I did it again. I picked socket 939 for my upgrade last time not knowing that AM2 was about to replace it. This time I picked a hybrid card that has the Northbridge of one board and the southbridge of another so it does not live in either world so one cannot ( yet) find anythin to monitor it. I will just stay with my modest OC of 3.0 having upped the multi to 15 from 13 but no more till I can get some real readings on my temps. Could I count on the temps listed in bios as being "fairly" accurate??

Stranger still....I went to GIGA's website to make sure I had the right drivers installed and it links me to the AMD 7 series chipset download so I download and try to install them and it tells me the device I am trying to install drivers for cannot be found....they call the board a 740G chipset. Should I try installing the 690G chipset drivers??

I think you should get in touch with Gigabyte and ask them what the hell is the driver situation with this board.

Sent them an e-mail today. I think that the most likely thing is that someone at Gigabyte messed up and linked my model number to the chipset of the 780G. The other possibility is that you have to use an AM2+ CPU to "activate" the 7 series chipsets features. There is an * on the specs list that mentions that the hyper trans will change its speed when an AM2+ ( phenom) processor is in place. It is also possible that the 7 series has to have Vista like some of the features on the 780G.

With all the talk, maybe the 780G might have been the better MOBO with the support too. :-k
