CPU Upgrade

Post by oldguru »

I have the Intel D845EBG2 socket 478 motherboard. I am currently running the 2.26 CPU. I am considering upgrading to a faster CPU. Will this MOBO run the 3.06 G CPU? The mobo and cpu are both rated at socket 478 and speed of 533 Mhz although intel website doesn't list it as supported.

Thanks !!!!

oldguru! Welcome to the forums. I don't think the 3.06GHz processor will work. I see no mention of support and in the BIOS release notes I see nothing about adding support for it - http://downloadmirror.intel.com/5431/eng/P08-0015.pdf

I did a quick Google search and pulled up this page: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboar ... 008639.htm

It looks like a Pentium 4 2.80GHz processor will be the fastest supported. That processor runs on the same 533MHz bus and offers a 24% boost in clock speed.

If you really wanted to keep that computer it sounds like it would be worth the ~$4 to get a 24% boost in clock speed. Be sure to update to BIOS P08 before changing processors.

Thank you for the reply!!! I believe tho that the three links you gave me were for processors with bus speed of 800 and 1 at 1000. My mobo is rated for only 533.

thanks again!!

That you are right...

How about the Intel SL7E2 - http://ark.intel.com/products/27453/Int ... MHz-FSB%29

Not 100% sure it would work, but it has double the cache, runs at 533MHz and is for socket 478.

It's also $4.90 shipped, which is still great -

The only hitch with that one is if the BIOS for your board will support it.

If you wanted to play it safe get the 512KB cache version - Intel SL6PF
