ab9 pro new PC

Post by zparker »

As i was reading on someone else's post I also had trouble with the Abit AB9-PRO motherboard. I have finally decided to build myself a up-to-date computer. I have use the folowing parts: Abit AB9-pro, XFX GeForce 7950GT, XMS2 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2-6400) Dual Channel Memory TWIN2X2048-6400C4 (4-4-4-12) , Core 2 Duo E6400, 2 Seagate Barracuda sata 3.0gb 320gb 16mb cache running raid 1 and a 550watt power suppily. Getting windows to load is HELL if you dont know what your doing, it took me 2 times to figure out what drivers needed to be loaded before i got a smooth load on the "3rd times a charm" load. After windows was running I attempted to load the nvidia drivers that came with the videocard, after directx 9.0c. While loading the driver the videocard dropped all signal to the monitor, and windows just froze (which i could only tell by the capslock light not responding) Pressed the reset button heard the MB beep for post but no video. pressed reset again, post beep, and monitor says signal not supported!!?WTF!!? cleared the CMOS reboot, monitor comes up but windows attempts to load butget to windows loading and the pc just restarts... Go to safe mode...blah blah un-install nvidia driver fkin reboot again....really starting to get pissed when i have repeated this 4 times..lol.. Oh yeah out of the box the video card has corrupted graphics but now when anything has loaded just the inital boot screen and while windows has that scrolling strip. In windows or in the bios everything is just fine :? enough to drive me insane...espically since i have about 1100 bucks worth of (at this point worthless shite) computer stuff just laughing at me

Does anyone else have any experience with video cards doing anything like that?

I am taking back the videocard to get a new one today.
I will update this part of it.

The point of this pc is to overclock to 3.2ghz which i have read should be perfectly fine. The ram at 1:1 is at 800mhz and the stock heatsink should be ok for this. The Video card is a passive heatpipe cooling, which i have 4 34cfm fans 2 in 2 out and 1 is on the side and pushes air from outside the case straight across the fins of the videocard so it should stay really cool.

I was really starting to worry about that too

Post by zparker »

I took the video card back they tested it. of course everything was fine. they replaced it with a new one anyway. everything is working now. ran 3dmark2001se got a 33261 with everything stock. also ran 3dmark2003 got 20811 bone stock.

How are those numbers. The best my old pc got was 13485 for 2001se

temp readings

Post by zparker »

ok, seems like everything is ok, After running the 2 benchmarks i checked the temp and the cpu itself was 31-32c the case temp was 25c. I put my hand on the video card passive heatsink...cold to the touch. (I went ahead and picked up a new case lastnight too. I was able to find one that had 2 80mm slots in the back 2 in the front i in the side in the perfect spot so it blows right into the videocard fins ) I am ready to see what this thing can pump out and i really think it will stay cool with the airflow im pushing.

awesome... sounded like you had a single bad memory chip on the card that was causing it to go nuts.

Cheers

yea goin nuts is an understatement when the comp store gives you 7 days to return stuff for exchange. I had to try to pin point the issue with not having anything from my old pc i could test in the new one. I am so releived and want to load some games and test it tonight.

3.2!!

Post by zparker »

At 2.8 I was able to get a 38685 in 3dmark 2001se. 3dmark 2003 would not run stable at that clock speed. So i went up to try for the hell of it.

Running at 41c at internet surfing usage with (1.35~1.36 volts) set at 1.375 in bios.

Got it running at 3.2 ghz with the memory at 2.2v on a 1:1 ratio. Ran 3dmark 2005 got 10168. Going to run 2003 also and see what it givs. The video card hit 44c and the processor was at 47c all on stock cooling. I just downloaded Sisoft sandra 2007lite and am going to benchmark everything else. I am impressed with the stock cooling. I think i can overclock the video card to the speed of the gtx or close due to the heatpipe design and fan blowing right thru the fins. All in time my friend...

I have to put the pictures on my server so they show up here since i dont have a image hosting account anywhere.[/img]

final benchmarks

Post by zparker »

Ok rebenchmarked at 3.2ghz stock cooling. Processor never got over 45c and the videocard never got over 49c. Remember the video card has the passive heatpipe design. Running stable Si Software benchmarked cache memory processor and anything else that had to do with stability... Running perfectly. 3dmark 2001se score= 42030 3dmark 2003 score= 22851 3dmark 2005 score= 10220

This processor rocks :drinkers:
what other benchmark programs should i use?

lock up

Post by zparker »

After all the benchmarking, testing and time, I installed Prince of Persia (Sands of Time) played it for about 30 minutes flawlessly. got out of the game went to surf the internet after checking the video card temp(57c) history and the cpu temp(46c). While surfing the web the computer froze. pressed reset rebooted fine. Surf internet again froze again??WTF!!

It was late and I was tired so i just clocked it down to 2.4ghz and went to sleep.

What could be the cause if benchmarking and testing show stable as hell? :dunno:

Played half life 2 last night at 1400x900 4xaa / super-sampling / 4x what ever the other one is. Set up the guru to default the system to 2.56/core memory 1:1, core voltage is 1.375 I set up user 1 to be (3.2ghz) same voltages. (I was playing at 3.2ghz) I paused the game after about an hour and alt escaped out checked the temperatures (intel 44c) (nvidia 47c) this this runs so cool. Did not have it crash lock up anything. Right before i was going to play and the hl2 screen went to start loading the pc locked up, i rebooted and everything was fine for 4 hours of gaming. My framerates hovered around or above 200fps for most of the gaming time. The lowest it ever got may have been 140fps.

So again i ask What in the hell is going on at internet surfing times?

Download "Orthos" here link
It will stress test both your cpu cores more than gaming will ever do. Watch your CPU temps when it's running too.

It sounds like either a RAM or a CPU issue, you might need to add a little more voltage..............test with Orthos first and report back!

ram is a 2.2v processor is at 1.375 but guru shows it to be at 1.36 and cpu-z shows the voltage as 1.2 or some oddly low ammount. I have screen shots but i dont have my server running right now but it is next to be set up now that the new pc is working.

change the command rate from 1T to 2T on the memory timings.... 1T on any Core 2 Duo motherboard is hard to do, but sandra isn't always right and that's why I asked. When I run systems at 1T on C2D systems I get random lockups. If that doesn't work check your tRFC timing and tell me what it is. I can throw 2.4-2.5V at the memory and still can't get 1T command rates on many LGA 775 Boards... Intel's memory controller for DDR2 doesn't like 1T command rates.
