LGA 1366 Core i7 Choices

Post by dgood »

I have all the parts for a new computer now except the processor. I need an LGA 1366 Core i7. The 920, 930, 940 are all no longer easy to find and the ones that are aren't much cheaper than the 950. The 950 is approx 290 or 300 dollars. Why is it that all the triple channel cores are 280 or more for the processor? What is the recommended processor for this X58 chip set? I am going to likely get a 950 unless there are different recommendations.

Other parts (likely won't influence your decision)
Intel X58SO Motherboard
OCZ Agility 128GB SSD Sata II MLC
6GB DDR3 1600mhz (triple channel)
XFX Core Series PSU 650watt
XFX 6870 Black Edition

Thoughts? or comments on my build?

the 1366 CPU is an enthusiast plat form so expect a higher price for that CPU. any of the 1366 CPU's will work for ya. I would recommend a bigger PSU from the looks of what you got listed, something right around a 750Watt (minimum) to larger.

To bad you don't live near a microcenter, they have the 950's for $199.99

CPU calculator estimates my peak loading to be only 440watts. The XFX psu has 52Amps on the +12v rail. I also have an ocz stealthstream2 600watt which has 4 rails rated at 18amps a piece but only 600watt overall. Which is odd as 18*4*12=824watts on 12 volts alone. Reviews have shown that unit to deliver much higher peak power than the rating. I don't think my psu will be an issue. I also still have my corsair HX 620 also

The price isn't good for online purchases?

I know that's why I wrote "to bad you don't live near a microcenter" Meaning if he did he can go to the store and pick one up.

if you go to the microcenter site, 90+% of goods are "Available for In-Store Pickup Only." including just about every part made since 2007 (MC has a few pentium4's that you can get shipped though lol)

Bwall here on the forums lives by a microcenter... If you wanted to send him some funds I'm sure he could pick one up and mail it to you for a minimal mileage charge. If I wasn't 70 miles from a store I'd offer to do it for you.
