Core i7-990X Extreme Edition

Post by vbironchef »

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115079 This looks sweet. Really not much of a increase in speed. Anyone know when the 32nm chips will be out?

Aren't all intel hexacore chips 32nm?

I think its a hugely stupid product. The 2600K is probably still at least 20% faster core to core, and should over clock an extra 300-400 mhz higher. So the benefit of spending the extra $700 seems really suspect.

 oh yea, I forget. I agree with you 100% except for the 6 cores. Ok, so any idea when the next chips come out. My reason for asking is I want to upgrade my Qx6700 cpu. So I would like a good upgrade over my i7 980x chip. Yes I know I will need new motherboard and memory.

Looks like Q4 2011.

Toms has a news article on it.

Good post! Confussed yes! What do you suggest I do? wait and see or when newegg starts selling the 1155 chipset again buy it? 2600K does seem very good.

The revised chipsets might start shipping this week. So it shouldnt be long before they are available again on New Egg. I would definitely get a 2600K to replace the QX6700. The performance gain with the hexacore is only in certain heavily threaded applications and then not even that much.

For the extra $700 it would cost you, you could equip that system with 2 of Corsairs new P3 SSDs in raid 0, having 250gb of storage with a 940 MB/s read speed which would give a much better speed boost in my opinion. Or you could drop in dual GTX 570s. So many better ways to get more performance with the cost difference.
