Brand New i7 980 running very hot???

I received a new custom built (from a reputable company) PC today which I will be using for high end CAD rendering...

To see how it performed I installed a few programmes and set it to render on a large image, monitoring the core temps and load (all 6 of them) I could see it was running at 100% load which is fine but temps were hitting 84 degrees C!!!!!

After leaving it for an hour or so I came back to it to find it shut down and on a re boot got the 'Windows did not shut down properly' screen hinting at an overheat???

I am using a Titan Fenrir Evo Extreme Cooler which should be able to cope with that no problem, or am I wrong?

The Titan Fenrir is a very good CPU cooler and I have one that I use on the test bench to be honest. I have it on a Core i7-970 right now and it's doing just fine.

If I were you I'd remove the heatsink (be sure you have new thermal compound) and make sure it's seated on the processor correctly. Since you bought a brand new PC it likely got shipped and if they shipped it with the HSF installed it might have gotten knocked or something like that.

The temperatures are too hot for a stock clocked processor. Just curious who did you buy the system from?

How hard is it to remove heatsink > reapply thermal compound > and re attach heatsink, im not 100% tech savvy but prepared to give it a go!

pcspecialist.co.uk are a great company. one of the best for custom built computers and their prices are fantastic! but as is already said i would re-apply the thermal paste as it sounds very much like the heatsink got knocked about causing it to dislodge. i used eclipsecomputer.com and their prices are also fantastic and you can buy individual components but i would never use them to build me a pc as i found out from my 2 mates that had they pc damaged in transport and then when fixed they damaged the pc internaly they are very bad.

It's rather easy and takes under five minutes to do. Yes, I agree the temperatures that you are seeing are too high for that aftermarket CPU Cooler.

@ stock speed and full load it shouldn't be going over 55C with that cooler and yes 84C is waaaaaaaaaayyyy to high. You can easily fry the CPU and motherboard. It is easy to replace the CPU cooler and I would get a good quality paste (tuniq TX-2 or 3?) to get the best results. Good luck. On how to remove and replace the cooler, just google it

Ok well spoke to PCS today, they were telling me it's normal for the 980 to run at 80 degrees C and then told me to go into the Bios and change fan modes from 'Standard' to 'Turbo' which I did! The outcome, no difference what so ever, still not convinced it's normal to be running at 80 degrees C on 100% load! What does anyone else get on a similar i7 on Prime?

I have attached two pictures but not sure how helpful they might be, anyone care to point me in the direction of some good instructions of how to remove and re-install a heat sink? Also I have given the Fenrir a wobble while off and cant say it feels particularly loose! The system idles at 36 or so but seems to go through the roof with load!

Does the cooler use the Intel Push-Pin setup?

Since you say it feels loose then it isn't right. Even with the crappy push-pin setup it still shouldn't move. I have a huge Scythe push-pin cooler and when all the pins are locked the cooler doesn't move.

If they told you that 84C @ load is normal, then they are plain stupid. here is a review from LR: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/979/17/

As you see your temps should be about 55C as I wrote before (@ stock speed) and about 66C @ 3.5Ghz OC.

To remove the cooler, remove the RAM and the graphics card, so you have easy access to the cooler's base. Next Just just unscrew with your thumb the 4 thumb screws that attach the cooler:

After reaplying the thermal paste just put back the cooler and screw them back. Remember not to put too much paste, just a thin even layer on the CPU (after cleaning off the old paste).

Ok, a breakthrough at last, noticed one of the mounting screws was a bit loose, tightened it up (a-lot) and presto, max temps on 100% load are now 61 Degrees C, surprised that PCS missed something like that! Is 61 Degrees C a good temp to be getting at 100% load or should I be on the phone to them asking for better?

No idea what thermal compound they might have used perhaps I should buy a good one and try and re-apply everything!

I think that chip has different frequencies (Turbo Boost) depending on how many cores are being loaded. I think you should call and tell them you had to tighten down one of the screws. If nothing else have them make a note of it in case something happens down the road.

If you don't intend to OC further, than you are OK. If you do, than every degree counts. I would get a tuniq TX-2 if I was you but I'm not you

If I had to guess it's probably ASUS's PC Probe. I'd imagine the OEM probably just inserted the disc that came with the motherboard and told it to install all of the software on the disc.

Yea, it's 'Core Temp 0.99.8' it's meant to be relatively accurate. I now have the cores running at an acceptable temperature (63 deg C at 100% load), thanks for the help! I rang PCS again who said again 85 degrees C was quite normal and in THEIR testing found that the optimum temp for an i7 980 was 85 - 90 degrees C!!!!! Somehow I think they just did not want to pay for a return and re-deliver as these temps are ludicrous! But im happy with temps I have now!

Although....as an after thought any ideas as to why cores 5 and 6 are running 8 degrees (give or take) higher than 1,2,3,4? Termal paste position???

The 5-6 cores might not be making as good of contact with the HSF base. They could also be working harder, for whatever reason. My Core #3 on my Q9550 tends to run hotter than the other 3. I guess that's just the way it goes some times. Download the Super Pi build that tests each core and comes back with an average (sorry forgot the name). I can almost guarantee you that the 5th and 6th cores will have a faster completion time than the others (was the case with me an my core #3).

I believe your thinking about hyper-pi, runs an instance of Super-pi on each of the cores
