Intel 3820 vs 2600/2700K performance

Post by PopsRacer »

I'm looking to build a new system and wondering if the new Intel 3820 processor is going to out preform the 2600/2700K processors or am I just wasting my time and should just wait till the Ivy Bridge platform comes out. The 3960 and 3930 processors are a bit pricecy and so are the motherboards. Anybody have any incite in this subject?

As long as I know, the 3820 is not out yet, so you will have to wait.

2700k owner here:

This CPU is a great deal. It's cheaper and can compete on around the same level with a few minor changes.
For direct comparison, this article was just posted that helps put some numbers. Although there is no direct graph to graph comparison, the last paragraph sums up the results directly to what you were wanting:

As far as my own experiences with it, I have it with aftermarket air cooling overclocked slightly for enjoyment (and to make it act more as a space heater since it's winter now). I did not have any hiccups with it and it's been a real reliable CPU. Not once do I see it being the bottleneck in my system; actually: the bottleneck in my system currently is my hard drive which is a Velociraptor from before SSD came onto the scene and it's quite noticeable at start up.

Well if it was me I would wait till Ivy-Bridge, but that may take some time. I really like what I'm seeing for the 3820.
