i5 3570k dying?

Post by DJ Tucker »

My cpu in title gets a whea uncorrectable error at any frequency above 4.2ghz. I was running 4.5ghz stable at 1.28v and even upping vcore to 1.4v still gives that same error. i'm running 4.2ghz at 1.16v. Is my i5 3570k dying???

I would say yes but there are so many factors in overclocking that I am not aware of, I could be 100% wrong. helpful kinda guy aint I

now, I would recheck every setting and then re-apply thermal paste as it may just be worn out. After applying the paste make sure to run the system through a few hot and cold cycles before trying to OC again.

I have done this many times before posting this. I really hoped that this wouldn't be the issue. No matter what voltage I use above 4.2ghz I get an instant whea uncorrectable error as soon as I reach the login screen.

A used i5 3570k will set me back £120+. That's a hole i'm willing to make upon death of this cpu. If this poor thing fails at anything below 4.2 I think I need a replace at this point :( I fear I may not be lucky in a cpu that allows me to clock at 4.5ghz at 1.28v. from what I've seen 1.3v is average for 4.5ghz. Not a golden chip but above average :)

That was interesting - maybe you have corrupted system files that could be causing it?

I havent overclocked in a while. I just havent really had the need personally. My i7-3770K is still running everything I throw at it without having to increase the speed but I do have that option in the future if needed!

I have re-installed windows 10 just for the sake of it. Backed up all my data and re formatted my ssd then went ahead and did the rest. Wasted time but got a clean build running the windows 10 anniversary update. Unfortunately no success. Still get the same problem. 4.2ghz is stable at 1.18v and that's as far as I can go :(

Set it back to factory clock to save the cpu if you want to try and let it last longer.

Only other possible thing I could think of is the motherboard could be going bad but with you oc'ing it does point more towards the cpu, in my brain anyway.

Just tested my cpu in another mobo (gigabyte dh3). I cant even get to 4.2ghz on that board. However, I get passed post and as soon as I get to the windows loading screen it restarts. Definitely think cpu is at fault here.

Also noticed that I can only run single channel memory with this cpu now as stated in a previous post. I tested a g2020 with both mobos and it works fine with it and dual channel works fine to.

Unfortunately 4.2ghz is no longer stable. I get whea uncorrectable error on that overclock to. 4ghz is the only clock stable thus far. I would give my cpu until crimbo if I'm lucky. Just need to get an i5 3570k cpu as cheap as possible before crimbo. A little tight on cash right now as I now care for my disabled partner who is due to pop in December.

Edit: I found out the bsod was caused by hal.dll. Usually this is caused by a memory error. After 2 hours of testing (bear in mind, my i5 3570k IMC can't do dual channel no more) it turns out to be the IMC. Turning the xmp profile off and running at 1333Mhz has worked for now.

All the CPU issues I have been having lately is due to the IMC. New CPU will be needed soon :(

hopefully you are back at stock speeds right now all around ;)

No clue where to find bargains on cpu's unless someone runs a sale. I would never buy a used one either. I have also never owned an i5 so I don't have any around here.

i can by it new but my god its expensive. more so than the new 6th gen i5/i7. but I guess it wouldn't need a new mobo or ram or OS.
