AMD Phenom X4 9850 Processor Review - B3 Stepping

When the AMD Phenom series of processors launched back on November 19th, 2007 no one could have expected just how rough things were about to get for AMD. AMD has fixed the problems with a new B3 stepping of Phenom. All of the new Phenom B3 steppings will be named with the nomenclature of what AMD is calling the '50 series' of processors. The four new AMD Phenom X4 processors that AMD is announcing today are the 9550 (2.2GHz), 9650 (2.3GHz), 9750 (2.4GHz) and 9850 Black Edition (2.5GHz).

Legit Bottom Line: AMD fixes the Phenom X4 processor with the release of the 50-series, but launches the Phenom X3 processor series with B2 steppings that have the same issuses as the old Phenoms. Strange huh?

Gaming performance unchanged from the B2 stepping?

Interesting that AMD now will have a Quad core that is almost able to compete with the Q6600 at just under $100 less. Will sway quite a few potential buyers I should imagine.

Aww, thanks Nate.

Did you have the results and not include them, or have to benchmark them all just for me?

had the intel numbers... just had to retest the 9600 and 9850, which was just a game install and a CPU swap! What else would I do at 6am besides run benchmarks for you ;)

work on another review? hmm, i cant figure out what amd did to these chips to make them such bad overclockers :-k you have to put 1.6 volts thought them just to get to 3ghz, but the q6600 can do 3 ghz easy at stock volts, even though its not a native quad core and is built on the same 65nm proces.

Think he meant that instead of running the game benches you could have started on the next review in the list... thats how I read it anyway.

Great to see fixed silicon finally nearing availability. Time to move to 45nm now!

I really need to know if the 9800GTX is a real new card, or just a speedbumped 8800GTS.

The GX2 is 2 underclocked 8800GTS, so it's safe to guess the 9800GTX is a rebadged and overclocked 8800GTS.
