Palit 8800 GTS 1GB Sonic SLI Video Card Review

Palit 8800 GTS 1GB Sonic SLI Video Card Review

With 1GB of GDD3 memory and a healthy dose of overclocking, does the Palit GeForce 8800 GTS 1GB Sonic have what it takes to knock out the legendary 8800 GTX? Read on as we take a pair of Palit GeForce 8800 GTS 1GB Sonic graphics cards and run them in SLI against three GeForce 8800 GTX graphics cards on a Dell 30" monitor at 2560x1600! If that isn't enough we also overclock these already overclocked cards to the bleeding edge, which is something you'll want to see.

At the heart of our 8800 GTS is the G92 core clocked at 730 MHz which is a generous step up from the 650MHz that comes on most 8800 GTS 512MB cards. Not only does our card have double the memory, it’s clocked higher than the standard 512MB cards as well, coming in at 2100MHz versus 1940MHz for the standard card.

Bionic frogs are the uber coolness 8-[

It would be a good idea to have this card in the 9800GTX review ;)

If there have been no changes to the 9800GTX core from the GTS, then as this card has shown, the 8800GTX will still be able to beat the 9800GTX. :-k

Good review! I was surprised that the extra memory actually did add some performance!

Isnt this review flawed ? I mean this is an Oveclocked variant of the 8800GTS 512 and you take it up against a stock 8800GTX variant. Shouldnt you guys take it up against the EVGA 8800GTX AC3 or the XFX 8800GTX XXX ? I know that most people know that the 8800GTX can also be OCed but not everyone does so it would be nice if you had that included in your review.

The review is not flawed by any means... No site includes every video card under the sun as it's not practical. We had to borrow three GeForce 8800 GTX's just to get Triple-SLI results. Review sites don't get everything they want or ask for and they certainly don't have a high budget. We try our best to bring you the latest and greatest reviews, but we can only work with what companies send us. If a 8800 GTX XXX is 5% faster than the Geforce 8800 GTX then just add 5% to the figures in your head... It doesn't mean the review is flawed, just means the readers have to do some mental math for cards we didn't use.

True but at least a comment bellow the review should exist stating that the GTX exists in OC variants as well....There are people out there with minimal knowledge of what is out there.
Plus you could also manually OC an GTX to its max the way you OCed the Palit 8800GTS 1GB to its max...That would be more correct.

Wow, I'm very impressed by this card, and this in turn depresses me even more about the 9800 series. Not only the 9800GTX is architecturally identical to 8800GTS 512, but now we actually see that if NVIDIA wasn't lazy and actually did up the RAM size on those things, the cards would be worthy of the 9800 title. Makes me wonder what NVIDIA has been doing for the last half a year aside from spreading rumors about how great their quad SLI would be.

The Palit was overclocked because this was a review of the Palit card, and actual overclocked game results weren't included as no two cards overclock the same. To include game results from an overclocked GTX in the review (and if we are doing that, why stop at that one card) doesn't make sense to do in the timescale of writing the review or because overclocked results differ so much between cards.

If people are wise enough to look up reviews of a card before they buy it, then I'm not so sure they need to be told that overclocked varients of their/other cards exist. If people are look through enough reviews I'm sure somewhere there will be a comparison of the overclocked varient to the stock clocked.

When the 9800GTX comes out I think you guys should compare this one with it, since they will be in the same price range. I am planning on getting a 9800GTX but I have also considered this one, maybe it will end up being a better buy!

I'm surprised you fellows didn't bother trying Crysis with some Very high settings to see if the extra ram made a difference there. DiRT with Ultra details would have been another good one to fire up.
