ECS GeForce 8800 GT Video Card Review - N8800GT-256MX

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB card has been around since November 2007 and now, six months later some very interesting versions of this card are appearing on the market. The ECS N8800GT-256MX is one of these cards! It appears that ECS has placed 512MB of GDDR3 memory on the N8800GT-256MX, but only enabled 256MB of the graphics memory through the BIOS. Once a quick BIOS flash is performed on the card it turned into a GeForce 8800 GT 512MB graphics card for the price of a 256MB card!

That's a way slower card too... Check out this review I did on the original GeForce 8800 GT 512MB card - http://www.legitreviews.com/article/590/1/

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB card at default clock speeds beat the EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB card that was overclocked! This ECS card when flashed to 512MB will perform the same. The card you linked to will be slower than the EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB card as it's got half the frame buffer. Not a good buy at all IMHO.

True. The 8800GTS G80 cards only have 96 stream processors, so that kind of hurts, lol, versus the GTS 512MB/GTX's 128SP and then GT/GTS 640MB SSC cards that have 112SP. Also, the G92 cards (GTS 512MB/GT) overclock *MUCH* higher. See that 700MHz clock? A G80 card could never dream of that without voltage mods.

One ironic thing I noticed:

"Do-it-yourself computer building used to be about getting comparable or more computing power for fewer bucks than you would find at the local computer shop, or the big box stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. Nowadays it is all about the bang for the buck. Sure we can pump out articles all day long about Triple-SLI and the latest QX processor from Intel to get “ooh’s and ah’s” but what most of you readers really want to see is what piece of hardware is going to perform closest to a high-end solution without draining your wallet as said high-end solution would. This is the market that ECS is reaching for and today’s review is a great example of that."

And then all the tests are at 2560x1600, needing a $1,300 monitor. Well, there was that lone 3D Mark '06 test at 1280x1024, though. I know why it was done, but I thought it was kind of funny.

Still, nice find! Wonder how many other GT 256MB are like this? I would've never guessed a maker to do that. Now if only nVidia didn't laser off the other 32 stream processors off my GTS G80, lol. :)

P.S. And for those actually doing this mod: NVFLASH is good, but takes a little time to get it to work. Others may want the Windows/GUI program NiBiTor.

Tell me about it... It would have been nice to see lower resolutions, but Brian wasn't having any of that. ](*,)

Have always relied on Tiger Direct. Then two times in a row they sent me the wrong parts, even though I told them exactly what parts and what PC's (including model #'s) for. So I am leary of them. Though I agree their prices are difficult to beat. Just make sure you get the right item cause returning it is a nightmare.

Maybe you could take a chance on ebay. This seller has 100% positive feedback and he's been a seller since May 1999.

So far bids are up to $78.00 and the auction for the ECS GeForce 8800 GT ends 8 hours from this posting. I just upgraded or I'd consider bidding on this deal. What the heck? Put your highest bid under Tiger Direct's price of $150 and see what happens?

Good luck!!!

Well, good for you, bad (ish) for them. Depends if it costs more money to remove the chips than to just leave them on, because, logically thinking, it costs more to put memory on products and then not be able to sell them at the price-point of a 512MB card because half of it is disabled.

@ 2560x1600

If I had a monitor like that, I wouldn't want to use anything less either, lol.

Memory is dirt cheap right even for us at the consumer level, imagine how cheap is it in bulk quantities, it probably makes nearly no difference for them.
