Folding@Home Finally Coming To NVIDIA GeForce Video Cards

It has been over a year since ATI got into the Folding@home project and it seems that the time is right for NVIDIA to join in! Mr. Vijay Pande himself was in San Jose today and we managed to catch up with him while he was giving the presentation on behalf of Stanford University on how folding is going to work on NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards. This is a must read if you are interested in distributed computing.

The highlight of the presentation is when folding@home was announced to run on NVIDIA graphics cards. It seems that the folding team was able to program a folding client in C thanks to the NVIDIA CUDA software environment. NVIDIA has 70 million graphics cards on the market today that can use CUDA programming, which means that the folding project could get a huge boost in performance if more end users would join the project.

Aww, unreleased products that we aren't allowed to look at. :(

So does CUDA really work on ANY nvidia card?

Rats. Either way I would need to upgrade to benefit using a GPU.

I gas didn't cost sooooo much, more people would be upgrading and building more systems. The only way to beat the gas crunch is to pedal the butt off or walk fast.

Good to hear nVidia is joining the efforts. =D>

From what I remember of the ATI one, it killed the cpu folding if you rant he video folding..??

I hope the nvidia will let you still fold on the cpu along with folding on the gpu without a performance loss, or at least a minimal loss!!!

Mike

Now we will have to wait another 20 years to have it in our hands, like the SMP client taht took FOREVER to come out after dual chips were released! Hopefully it will come out REAL fast, but I am not holding my breath. :(
Remember, I am opinionated and nothing I say or do reflects on anyone or anything else but me :finga:

Do we have a concrete release date? I just upgraded to an 8800gt and would love to get a GPU client to run alongside the cpu client.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.0GHz
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
2x1gb G.Skill DDR2-800 4-4-3-5
eVGA 8800GT SC with Akimbo cooling Kit
WinXP Pro
Dell 2405fpw @1920x1200

All wrapped up in a Lian-Li PC-G70a
