F@H - 4,500+ Points a Day w/ a $49 GeForce 9600 GSO

Post by Apoptosis »

When the NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO was originally released in April of 2008 it was priced slightly lower than the GeForce 9600 GT as it had lower clock speeds, but oddly enough it came with more shader processors. The EVGA e-GeForce 9600 GSO Dual-Slot Edition had an MSRP of $164.99 when it first came out, but is now just $49 after rebate and boy can it fold!

Image
The EVGA e-GeForce 9600 GSO Dual-Slot Edition graphics card is the card that can be had for $49.99 with free shipping, a free 2GB USB Flash drive and the retailer is Newegg! For that price you don't get a fancy factory overclocked card, but it does come with the standard clocks - 550MHz core clock, 1600MHz memory clock (effective) and 1375MHz shader processor clock frequency with a total of 96 shader cores. What makes this card so interesting from a folding perspective is that it has 96 stream processors (more than a 9600 GT), is very cheap, uses little power, produces little noise (thanks to the dual-slot cooler), and can overclock like a bat out of hell.

BUY IT!

I did and it is overclocked to 745/1862/902 and folding away.

I dont have any program to measure the ppd from it, but it has pushed me over the 10k a day mark, so it is well worth the $50 after rebate!

You should get fahmon, it can track clients progress and ppd on your machine and any machines in your network that you have access to.

I tried, but with Vista32, Vista64, XP and Linux running on the machines - trying to get the network to see everything without having to input passwords (the only thing that pisses me off about Vista-ITS A PAIN!) is a nightmare!

If you have a way to do it without Vista freaking out, I will slap it on :) Would be nice to see the Linux one also.

I've had it monitoring a linux install before, but a friend did all the linux stuffs, all i had to be able to do was see the directory where folding was located on from the windows box. I think he had samba or something installed.

I never really got into F@H, but what's the purpose of the points? Bragging rights?

Depending on the OS, install FahMon from source is easy. Just matter of having all the dependencies installed, and 3 commands, ./configure, make, make install

and yes it was probably samba that was using, or some other sort of filesharing. If the os is Ubuntu i could walk you through it.

I have a 9600GSO in my wife's rig, and it's sitting at 4804ppd on a Project 5013... or 1:26 per step. 625/1780/900. I'm wondering now if I can push the shaders as high on my card as Nate did on the one he has? I happen to be off work tomorrow, so I'll find out and report back.

My 9600GT could only put out about 3600PPD, and that's if I leave the computer on 24/7, which I don't do. To me, energy conservation is more important than folding. Why? Simple. Without humans, there will be nothing to fold for.

Nice card.... I was wondering if you might put a points chart for the cards on a given system to see how they stack against each other.
