Water Cooling Experiment Not Going So Good...

Post by Major_A »

As some of you know this is my first attempt at putting water in a PC. At this rate it might be my last one for a while. I've been messing with this damn thing since 1:30PM CST (it's 9:15PM CST now). Besides the fact that I could've had an air cooled PC together by 2:30PM this damn kit won't stop leaking. I fix one leak and another one pops up.

Swiftech H20-220. The block/pump keeps springing leaks in different places. And it only seems to happen when it is mounted on the socket.

Not good man... is it leaking out the block itself or the connectors/tubing?

The pump/block is three layers and they keep leaking. I just pulled the entire thing apart and put it back together. Some of the screws didn't seem very tight so now I know it's how it should've been in the first place. So far 20 min down on the socket and no leaks. If this does fix the problem how am I ever supposed to trust this thing in the future?

Have you contacted Swiftech at all? It could be faulty if it did this from day one.

I let it run all night and no leaks. I picked it up to see if I could see anything and it started leaking again. I just emailed Swiftech about the issue.

*EDIT*
While waiting on Swiftech to answer my email I completely disassembled the entire block and pump. I dried it out, cleaned some parts with rubbing alcohol and reseated all the o-rings. Instead of using the dinky plastic hose clamps I found some stainless ones and tightened the hose down that way. So far it's bone dry. I'm going to let it run a few more hours sitting beside the case and then I'm going to put in back on the socket and see what happens.

*EDIT 2*
After showing no signs of leaking sitting flat on the table I put it back on the socket. I fired it up and no leaks. I turned it off and it was leaking like crazy. I am now out of ideas, and still waiting on Swiftech's email response.

Pictures aren't that great. Either I suck as a photographer or the macro on my camera isn't that good.

I've emailed them twice and no response. I explained the situation and what I'd like, i.e. a new block/pump and another bottle of HydrX since I used all mine trying to fix the leaks.

Here's the email response I received.
These products only leak when the installation procedure was not followed properly. The primary reason is that the pump wasn’t primed right, then installed on the processor, then overheat and melt the plastic inside… There is no problem to replace your apogee drive, but I am afraid it might happen again if we don’t make sure that your fully understand the installation procedure.
I followed their instructions to the T. Since this was my first time dealing with water I read the instructions triplicate before I installed anything. If anything I was overly cautious.

Well, at least they're willing to replace it, even if they were a bit condescending about it.

You made sure to not run the pump dry at all, correct?

Absolutely. If this was the case then why did it leak out of three different places on the block?

It leaked out if the top, socket adapter, and copper block either all at once or throughout trying to get it working.

After calling and talking to one of the employees they are setting me up with an RMA. He did say this in an email to me after the phone conversation.
Thanks for your call. There is nothing wrong in the way you installed and tested the unit.

Good to know! I figured you'd followed the instructions and you've asked good questions in the past. No worries mate, we'll get this thing working yet!

New(?) pump/block is on the way. I'll resume this headache next Monday evening after I get the package.

*EDIT*
It was a new pump/block and it's up and running again. So far so good, with three hours down.

Question...
Is the reservoir supposed to foam? Reason I ask is the manual mentions that I might foam. I see no foam. Before I gave up on the last pump/block the last run it was foaming like crazy. So is foam good or bad?
