WD My Book World Edition II External 2TB Hard Drive

The new My Book World Edition II network storage systems came out today and we have the 2TB model (WDH2NC20000) on the test bench to see how it performs. Read on to see how to map the drive, configure the backup software, and to see how fast files can transfer on a gigabit network.

The My Book World Edition II network storage system uses RAID 1 (Mirrored) technology to automatically and continuously maintain a second copy of user’s data using supplied software that you need to install on each computer that you want to keep backed up. When running in RAID 1, if one drive in the two-drive system ever fails, the system continues to run and the data is safe. The My Book World Edition II storage device can be run in RAID 0 (Striped) mode as well if speed over redundancy is required. All My Book World Edition II's ship in mirrored mode, though, as the main purpose of this drive is for data security. As a result, that means you can only use half the rated capacity for file storage since one drive is used for a mirror.

Nice for a simple NAS solution. Kind of wish the throughput was a little higher, the drives in RAID1 will max out a gigabit connection on reads so either the RAID controller or the ethernet controller are bottlenecking. Not bad for the average consumer though.

Planning to buy this NAS. I have the following queries :
1. Read up a user review on some other site that this limits file size to about 300 MB for backup. Is this correct?
2. This does not have a fan to cool the HDDs. 2 discs of 1TB each should generate a lot of heat. What is your opinion on this?
3. Can i upgrade the discs on this box to 2 discs of 2 TB each and will it work like the WDH2NC40000 or is it that will NAS will spport only 2 discs of 1 TB each
Thanks
