With the launch of the AMD Radeon HD 5870 graphics card fresh on our minds, we couldn't help but wonder how far we could overclock the card if we weren't limited by what Catalyst Control Center capped us at? Read on to see what we can do with the AMD GPU Clock Tool on our 5870 that comes stick at 850MHz GPU and 1200MHz Memory.
Wasting no time, we started ratcheting up both the GPU and memory speed. At default voltage, we were able to reach a maximum stable overclock of 935MHz GPU and 1280MHz Memory. This is a gain of 85MHz and 80MHz respectively. We were able to get the card to run at 950MHz but would lock up midway through the second 3D Mark Vantage test. With a little more voltage 950-1000MHz should not be a problem on the Radeon HD 5870.
Without AOD working I was not able to verify the temps, but I have yet to see it break 70c in my system. I'll try to get GPU-z going with the overclock tonight.
As far as folding goes, we are not seeing the full power of the 4800 series yet, which means that there is not going to be a lot of speed up with the 5870. I know that they are in the process of re-writing the ATI GPU client but no timeline has been given.
There are going to be some great overclocks coming out of this card, at least another 100MHz GPU over what I got here once you can tweak the voltage a bit.

Looks like the reference PCB is using a Volterra PWM controller which means. Considering how the stock PCB is being used in this card I'd say they are addressing the controller via the I2C bus, meaning we can use Rivatuner to read and write to the PWM and adjust the registers manually. This means as much vGPU as the controller is electrically capable of delivering
