AMD Radeon HD 7950 & XFX R7950 Black Edition Video Card Review

AMD has finally released Radeon HD 7950, which happens to be the cut-down version of the Radeon HD 7970 graphics card that hit the streets on January 9th, 2012. The AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card is based on the same 'Tahiti' core architecture that is used on the Radeon HD 7970, but some has less features and lower clock speeds. Read on to see how the Radeon HD 7950 performs!

Image
After spending some time with the AMD Radeon HD 7950 we found it to be to be a very capable graphics card that was hands down faster than the AMD Radeon HD 6970/6950 from the previous generation. From our performance numbers it looks like the AMD Radeon HD 7950 should have no problem beating the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 video card and as you saw in our test results it was even able to beat out the EVGA GeForce GTX 580 Classified in a number of benchmarks...

I like the performance level and the power usage and how it compares to the 7970. It is exactly what a 6950 replacement should be, except I think anyone who is buying one before Nvidia releases their next gen parts is a fool, as odds are that the price will plummet. $450 now, maybe $300, $250 even in a few months. If they do a smaller memory version like they did with the 6950, you might even be able to get 2 of those for Xfire for the same cost.

If you have to buy now you are getting screwed.

What I'm wondering is what would happen if you upgraded a mid-range system to a card such as this? Say instead of an i7, how about an i5 or a Phenom II ?

Not enough time in the day my friend... I have a stack of 30+ products sitting here to review. I'd love to spend a week with just this card, but can't.

I got some free time today, so I went back and added in the MSI Radeon HD 6950 1GB and the AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB CrossFire setup to the chart for Battlefield 3. The Radeon HD 6950 is running 12.2 preview drivers.

If I missed it, then I apologize, but...

Where are the eyefinity benchmarks?????!?!??!?!?!?!?
This is a $500 card, and I want to see how many fps it can crank out at 5760x1080.
3 1080 monitors are cheaper than this card. A good percentage of us are interested in eyefinity resolution benchmarks.
With 3GBs, this card is being made for massive, multi-monitor resolutions.

Please add 5760x1080 as a standard bench resolution for bleeding edge cards.

I have asked about eyefinity before but never got a response. HardOCP had the benches for crossfirex setup at eyefinity resolutions .

I can see 7900 series and crossfire configurations tested with eyefinity. I really want to see how 7800 series does in a crossfire setup pushing 3 monitors.
