Horrid slow boot time!

Post by DJ Tucker »

So the title says it all and my god has it gone slow over the last 3 weeks. from 45 secs boot to 3 mins 30 secs boot. this is from power on button being pressed to the logon/password screen. it sits at the little sliding vista bar for 3 mins. nothing i have done works in fact it seems to have slowed down.

Any help is greatly needed!

try running ccleaner and fixing and registry issues.

Might also want to download crystal disk info and check the health of your hard drive to make sure it's not failing.

that said.. how old is your vista install? Might be time to format and do a clean install anyway if it's old.

That's my vote. On the upside I have a computer that naturally progresses to the ungodly boot times too. To this day I still haven't figured out why exactly it does it, but it doesn't happen until I install all of the Windows Update files.

What do you have starting up with your PC? Click Start->Search Box->type "msconfig" without the quotes and got to the Startup tab.

Could be spyware, pop ups, viruses, adware stuff like that.

Just to check, do you have the latest nForce drivers installed? Sometimes I've found that without using the proper driver (i.e. the manufacturer's) then that can cause similar issues.
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/nforce-v ... er-uk.html

Install that and see if it helps. I know this doesn't help either of us but Windows XP had a nice program called BootVIS where you could see how long every little thing took to start with Windows. Too bad Vista/7 doesn't have a similar app. The only thing I can think of that is similar to BootVIS is Soluto.

Couple things to try:
1) Try plugging your HDD into a different SATA header on the motherboard.
2) Download CrystalDiskInfo open it up and select Function->Advanced Feature->AAM/APM Control. See what those readings say. Maybe something set those values to Silent and Min Power.

If all else fails, a reinstall would be best at this point. If it still does it after ward, then you will at least know that it's not viruses or settings and possibly hardware related.

I'm not sure how often you look inside, but have you seen any blown capacitors on your motherboard or video card?

Now is the perfect time to install windows 7. Buy new cables for your hard drives as well or replace all your cables if you can.

I hope you are following the basics.

1. Disconnect from the Internet when installing windows.
2. Only have one hard drive connected when installing windows.
3. Install firewall and anti-virus before connecting to Internet.
4. Connect to Internet and do all driver and windows updates.
5. Connect second hard drive.
6. Install CC Cleaner and run.
7. Defrag and reboot as needed.

I think the covers it. Did I miss anything?

Are all your programs vista ready? All hardware and drivers vista ready? Other than that I don't have a clue. Sorry I can't help anymore. I wish I could.
