Ok, after running both cabcleaner and drivercleaner, everything works fine. The catalyst 4.8's are up and running, no apparent problems but I basically just played some UT2K4 to make sure it was working at all. It seems a little faster than the old MR drivers.

Thanks!

Sounds good. I'll try it after dinner with driver cleaner. I just uninstalled the 4.8's, installed 4.7's, same manifestation. The "SmartGart" feature on the driver control panel shows AGP as "off" entirely. If I change it to 8x or 4x it says it'll have to restart, then when I res...

Eh...no, I didn't uninstall the old drivers. I've never had to do something like that before... I'm currently trying the 4.7's and I'll see if they work right. If not, then I'll uninstall everything, then try 4.8's again. I can't do benches or anything because nothing that requires acceleration will...

Ugh. I installed 4.8's on my laptop and it's completely disabled all acceleration - according to the ATI control panel, AGP is even turned off entirely. Obviously this is impossible since I can see stuff on my screen, but obviously 4.8's are a little cranky with that mod tool.

Yeah, there are some nasty scams out there. But generally if you're careful, pay attention, and apply the old adage about "if it LOOKS too good to be true...", you're in good shape. Shipping really isn't that big of a deal though. Usually I reuse shipping boxes other people have sent me st...

Sorry for replying to myself but I just thought of something: Apoptosis: When you've tried to reclock your ram to 400 or whatever, have you tried just increasing the system bus? In other words, is the memory controller locked at DDR333/SPD, or is it synchronous with system bus? I wonder how hot this...

Yeah... it's weird. This motherboard chipset started out as an Opteron server board - Via K8T800 if I recall correctly. I don't know why the hell they'd take a DUAL CHANNEL DDR400 socket 939-capable chipset and then reduce the RAM speeds to DDR333. I mean... why would you take performance OUT of you...

I understand that some people don't want to mess with stuff like that, but that's their laziness, not any sort of actual barrier. 90% of the time when I sell my old equipment I get paid more than I actually paid originally, because I'm very careful to get a good deal in the first place. Also, Ebay i...

Thanks. I got my particular laptop from a place called xotic PC. They advertise on Ebay and their homepage is http://www.xoticpc.com. Helluvadeal, IMHO, as I checked out what this system would've cost me from Voodoo and it came out around $3200 or so to match the specs I got from these guys for $168...

Uh.... you sure about that? On the Alienware site they've got pics of a separate, discrete graphics module that's sold separately for $229 (just checked, that's actually not too bad these days). That's the price for a Geforce FX5700, incidentally. I can't find much that really explains this anywhere...

As long as we're talking gaming laptops, if you like Voodoo's laptops, they source their barebones from a company called (I think) Mitac. It's the same chassis, same loadout, for about half the money. I got my A64 3000+, 512mb DDR400, Toshiba 7200RPM 60gb, 15.1" for like $1600 new. I ain't sayi...

I'd have to disagree there. Yeah, you end up paying more for a laptop, but you can't honestly say that it's pointless trying to game on a laptop. I'm on the road about 3 weeks a month. A lot of that is spent in airports, on planes, and other places where you can't exactly drag out your SFF setup and...

Wonder how it'll do on a Mobile Radeon 9600 Pro-128mb? It's not just the extra RAM, it's also got a wider memory bus than the 64mb version. When my buddy gets done with the game he's going to send me his copy so I guess I'll find out then. The laptop in question has a Toshiba 7200RPM drive, Athlon64...
