The hack you are talking about is the Alky Project.
Its been out for a while now and it seems to be working according to some people.
I`m not sure if they have abandoned the project though because I really would want to dump Vista and run XP with DX10...

Between the e6850 and the Q6600 I would go for the Quad Core. Even though the 6850 is clocked higher benchmarks across the net have shown that the Q6600 outperforms it. I`ve searched for a while to see benchmarks between a Q6600 and a E6850 and it seems that the Q6600 is on par with the e6850 and sometimes even beats it. Getting a Q6600 would future proof you too. I think Lost Planet takes advantage of the 4 cores, so im thinking if one game does it then some shoul...

I`d say XFX or eVGA. I`d got for XFX personally. I had a bad experience with getting screwed over with the eVGA step up program but I guess that happen every once in a while.
