Re: Network demands for mulitiple streaming devices
Build yourself a pfSense router. Run ethernet cable to as many locations as possible. Use gigabit switches. Load access points to no more devices than physically possible. For full streaming, I'd recommend no more than 2 devices per access point. Yes, I have zero confidence in the reliability of wif...

Re: Disk error?
After having my first experience with a SSD crash a few years ago ... I began installing WD Black HDD's as a 2nd drive on all SSD equipped desktops. Then move all user file storage locations to the WD. Install OS & programs on the SSD, store files on HDD. No problems since. As a general rule, HD...

Re: WiFi Router recommendation please
That is amazing! For under $500 I might look at these for installing in some big houses that have multiple repeaters/routers/AP's (most routers can be repeaters or AP's now a days so whichever is cheaper and easier to set up is what I would have them get) I honestly never knew they produced a produ...

Re: WiFi Router recommendation please
Is there not a router already in the office? If so, then you only need an access point in the garage area connected to the existing router with a cable as you previously mentioned. I use Engenius wifi products exclusively for business installations. http://www.engeniustech.com/ Typically the EAP350 ...

Re: A little help with broadband Internet service providers
The provider would be Blue Wireless. They have a fiber pipeline through level 3, and will be able to provide you with carrier grade dedicated bandwidth for the internet connections. This is not normal consumer grade internet with multiple people accessing nodes on a first-come demand basis, but rea...

 Sorry .... My lovely wife tells me that quite often my "To the point" attitude comes off as rude & crude. Let me give you an example: A few months ago, I picked up a new customer that only has a server and 3 workstations in an accounting office. Their network was doing som...

Might be worth mentioning....
Windows Homegroup networking functions on IPV6.
If IPV6 is turned off, it might work, and it might not.
I have seen Homegroup stuff work, but it's a p1ss poor way of doing it IMO.

Sounds to me like the cable company has configured your new modem/router to hand out 1, (possibly more), IP via DHCP. Then they password protected it to keep you out of it. Charter cable does the same thing in this area. Edit: For business accounts, I've seen on many occasions where the cable compan...

Re: Any Linux users out there?
I run a dual boot / dual HDD system with Win7 on a Corsair GT SSD and Kubuntu on a WD Black HDD. I primarily use Windows. Use Kubuntu just for web browsing every once in a while. I loaded it just to keep up with their progress. Sometimes I have home users who do nothing but web stuff/email, and for ...

Re: Low data transfer speeds over USB 2.0
USB Cable Length Limitations: The USB specification limits the length of a cable between USB 2.0 devices to 5 meters (or about 16 feet) and for USB 1.0 the limit is 3 meters (which is about 10 feet.) This means you can't just connect a bunch of extension cables together and run them 30 feet to anoth...

Re: Looking for a great wireless router - help needed
.... mainly due to me being too stupid to get it working and the other being the electricity savings of a router over a computer running. It's REALLY simple ... I suppose for home networks, the power savings might be a concern ... But for business, the few $$ per year in power consumption is nothin...

Re: Looking for a great wireless router - help needed
The most reliable setup I have found is to use seperate components. All of the "all in one" boxes I've tried suck. If it's a 10+ machine network, or simply high usage, I use a P3 or P4 PC with a pair of gigabit NIC's and install Smootwall router software. If wireless is needed, I use Engen...

Win Server 2008 & Intel desktop boards
Hello all ... It has been several years since I did a hand build on a server. (Not since Server 2K) This week I discovered that Intel no longer provides drivers for Windows Server on their desktop boards. I did figure out that several of the Windows 7 drivers will work. (at least on the board I trie...

I have built 3 Auto Cad machines in the last few months. The aforementioned $1200 max is quite short of the amount it would take for hardware that I'd want to build it with. NOT including monitors. Minimum CPU = i7 920 Intel board 12 Gb RAM Intel 160 Gb SSD for OS & programs 2 Velociraptors in R...

Re: Blue Screen, i am sick of it
Just last week I saw a video card cause BSOD's on a customer's computer. It was an older ATI card of some flavor. I can't remember which model it was. My personal computer was randomly white screening, pinstripe screening, and black screening a few weeks ago. Once again ... video card. Mine was a 57...
